Rifle rest question

Hello all. I am getting back into shooting and was looking for a good quality front rifle rest for varmint shooting on turret bench. I am looking at a Caldwell Rock Deluxe and wanted to know if anyone has had experience with this particular rest. I have a older Hart rest but it weighs 15lbs and did not want to carry it because of the weight. I have used Harris bipods on my older guns but did not want to hang one on front of a new Cooper varmint rifle. Thank you all in advance for any advise.

I've been in the prairie dog towns shooting off portable benches. I had two rests with me. One was worth about $20 and the other was a common BR type rest (no names mentioned) that weighed many pounds.

Shooting varmints is not a matter of hitting the X or shooting a .1, it's about getting to the critter and holding the gun steady enough to make a minute-of-varmint shot. Need to be able to easily move the rest & bags to get those that are not straight in front of you.

When I'm shooting Benchrest, I'll use my Farley.
When I'm shooting P-dogs, I'll take the cheap & light POS.

yes. BR shooters use the stuff they know will be the absolute best there is- even shooting a .22 in the local claypit. that's why I mentioned a rolled up coat cause that's about the equiv. to a BR shooter- sorry- it's just the way we roll:D

Heavy and light rests

I have the typical Hart rest and a smaller aluminum rest that I made years ago and used for years before getting the Hart rest.

I've done quite a bit of PD shooting off portable tables and use the Hart rest exclusively. The additional weight of the Hart rest hasn't been a bother and I like the advantage that a quality rest provides.

Enjoy shooting on whatever pleases you.

I think the Caldwell is just as heavy as your Hart...

If you really want a lighter Rest, you can try the Lightweight Rest from Sinclair. And you can use the Top with a heavier base.

Caldwell Rock BR

I have used a Caldwell for awhile it is OK at best for me. My biggest issue has been finding bags front and rear to fit factory stocked guns. My last outing was with a Cooper, and the return to battery was so awful that i couldn't put anything together resembling a group. I have done better shooting with home made sand bags.

You'se guys is NUTZ :D

You need to just fuh'GIDDABOUT all this "front rest" stuff and getcha's some X-Bags like Uncle Bucks Bulls Bag or the Dog-Gone-Good Bags shown here.

Sand-filled shot bags work pretty well off of a portable bench in the field. You can switch a few different height (different degrees of fill) bags around to help line up on whatever you see.

The Hart only weighs about half of what a Farley weighs.....
There. That ought to make your Hart feel a whole lot lighter.;)

I think if you must have a light rest you could not get a better quality one than the Sinclair and it has different tops to choose from unlike the Caldwell. I have both and wish I'd bought the Sinclair both times.
