I do not shoot Benchrest. But I am looking for a good front rest only that will allow me to test ammo and do a little group shooting among friends.

I was looking at 2 from caldwells.....the BR comp. Midway has it on sale for $144 and the Fire control for $179

The thing I worry about with the fire control is the Joy Stick.
Does it lock well enough when you let it go.
And on the BR comp. how easy is the large wheel for the fine elivation control.
The Fire control is heaver 18 lb. vs 15 lb. But the top on the BR Comp. looks better then the one on the fire control.....But looks can be deceiving

I would like to here pros and cons on both.

Not familiar with those rests. For fine elevation changes use the rear leg leveling screw. The wheel for changing rows.

For what you intend to use it for:

either of those rests would be ok. I have been using a Farley since they first started selling them and would not ever go back to a "Conventional" rest but I will be the first to say the Conventional rests work just fine.

It is very convenient to use the Joy Stick rests such as the Fire Control.

for what you want either would be fine..i just sold a br rock for $ 100..you'll need a rear bag also

rear bag

Thanks to all that replied.

Maybe with the $35 I save going with the BR comp. I can get a rear bag.

Any suggestions on a rear bag....what should I be looking for in a rear bag?

TangoTwo Not familiar with those rests. For fine elevation changes use the rear leg leveling screw. The wheel for changing rows.

Are the feet that come on these caldwell rest good enough for this? Or will I have to buy an aftermarket set?

Thanks again
