Remington 700 action acting funny

My remington 700 (factory gun) chambered in .308 shot very well. .5 to .75 MOA with Sierra MK's. Then accuracy went down the tube. I wanted to use it for deer so I had a custom .308 barrel made. The gun shot terrible 3 - inch MOA. Then we took that barrel off and put on a .260 Rem. barrel. It shot horrible again. Throughout this I went through 3 different scopes. then we put the custom .308 barrel on a different action and it shot well. As unlikely as it seems, this leads me to believe that there is something wrong with my action. Any ideas?

Actions

If an action starts out good, there is little that can happen to it that can make it shoot as bad as you say yours is.

That being said, you could have developed a serious fire controle problem, like a broke firing pin spring. Galled luggs perhaps, but that just making opening the bolt harder, really doesn't affect the accuracy potential that much. But good grief, 3 inch groups with a custom barrel is darned near impossible unless the barrel is bound up in the stock, or the barrel is loose.

Granted, Remingtons are not known for being very true right out of the box, but if the darn firing pin hits close enough to the middle of the primer, and the bolt is timed well enough to make it fire, then it should shoot no worse than 1 inch with a custom barrel.

It will be interesting to see what you come up with.........jackie

Who is "we?"

Saying "something is wrong" is like your car mechanic building you a new motor and then saying "something's wrong, it won't start."

Sound to me like it's a fire control problem. First, look and see if the dents on the primers changed. Two disassemble the bolt and clean firing pin and bolt body out (don't forget to use a pipe cleaner and get the firing pin hole and the recess from the inside of the bolt. Clean the trigger.

This year I had a BR gun that drove me nuts. Shot great then just couldn't find the tune. Wasted a few hundred rounds and chased everything I could think of but took one thing for granted and guess what....that's what it was. The front scope base came loose....why did I take it for granted....I had JB Welded the screws and the base to the action....still worked loose....lesson learned.
