I have a chance to pick up a Remington 40X in 6MM. It has a wood stock with an attachment rail, very good condition. Price is under $700.00. I have not been able to locate any other 40X rifles chambered in this calibre, should I buy it or let it go?
Thanks,
Hammy

Hammy;
I owned one of the rifles you describe in the early 1980's. It was chambered in.244 Remington which was the predecessor to the 6mm Remington. I used it to punch paper and to shoot an occassional ground-hog. The difference in the (2) chamberings was the barrel twist. The ,244 Remington was a (14) twist(as I remember) It would shoot very well with bullets up to 75 grains. I shot the Sierra #1505 70 gr. boattail and Tom Metzger's 68gr flatbases in it mostly. The gripe that some had was the rifle would not shoot heavier bullets due to the slow twist. The 6mm Remington was then introduced that had a 9 or10 twist to enable use of heavier bullets but still support the lighter stuff. I cannot speak to the accuracy of the 6mm Remington but the .244 was an honest.3-.4 rifle with handloads and good bullets.If the rifle you are looking at has not been shot to death you should be pleased with it.And if it has it's only a re-barrel from being a shooter again.

Unless it is a single shot, the receiver is the same as a 700. I don't know why anybody would pay that kind of money for one. That is the receiver I'm speaking of. The whole rifle in good shape with matching numbers should be worth the purchase price.

Sure

Many consider the 6mm Remington on the endangered list. Like many chamberings, it has been overshadowed by other cartridges that got off to a better start. The .243 being main culprit.
I read an article a few years ago where the Author stated that there were probably more 6mmRem Ackley Improved rifles than actual 6mm Remingtons.
But that is a good price on a 40x in good shape. ........jackie

Very true about this cartridge, and sad to say it because I'd take a 6mm Remington over the 243 any day. It is just a nicer round to reload with the longer neck and better velocities with pressure bumped to 243 level.
