Rem 700 .308 to 7.62x39 Chamber

Was wondering if anyone had done a .308 Sporter barrel conversion to 7.62x39 or .243 to 6PPC chamber with a Rem sporter barrel?

I have converted a Mauser with a .308 bore and PT&G reamer throated for a .308 bore, but was wondering if there would be enough shank left after removing roughly 1.7" off. It will need to almost remove the .308 chamber right to about middle of the shoulder to .440. The shoulder will start to slope at that point. How much shank thickness is needed to be against the recoil lug?

Found it it won't work with a sporter weight, but works nicely with factory varmint barrels. Just cut 1.5" or so and make sure you get to at least halfway to the shoulder and neck on an old .308 Win and rechamber. Still plenty of meat for the shank.
Certainly won't be benchrest grade, but makes a nice shooter.

Just curious

Are you shooting .308 or .310-.311 bullets? nhk

Shoots either very well. It will probably shoot the .308 bullets best once I do some more testing. It's being bedded properly in the stock ATM and will conduct some groups when weather permits if anyone wants to know. The barrel originally got .5 MOA with .308 Win so I'm not expecting any better.

Czech surplus that gets 6" groups @ 100yds with an SKS will do 1.5 to 2" in this barrel. It's crappy ammo, but the tighter bore does help it out some and no pressures sign as far as I can tell with handloads or factory ammo.

Here's a photo of the shank recoil lug area. Tightened up solid and looks good to me.

And my humble benchrest and range.

RE: Rifle

Don't look bad at all. Did you have to do anything to the bolt face for the smaller 7.62X39 rim? Do you have a Sako style extractor?

I recognize the Hoppes rest; I have one too and made a few 'improvements' to it (see pic). I put a friction washer under the lock ring (indicated by toothpick) and put a larger knob on it, and drilled and tapped the top to put aluminum straps over the bag tabs on both sides to stablize the bag on the top. Just wish I had a 'range'. nhk

Nice Range

That is a great use of a road other than to drive on. I have often wished I lived beside a Power Line. The road makes a nice path though.

Yes I converted to Sako extractor and bushed the boltface in a previous thread of mine.
I like your Hoppes mod. I do have a nice ol' Hart front pedestal for the big guns, but I always get the Hoppes out for the hunting style rifles.
