Looking for advice, very interested in building a .3-.5 rifle. have mohawk 600 in 243 and wondering if this would be a good action to build to a good entry level rifle. or would i be better off starting with a 700 or a howa 1500 even. Just looking for answers. not looking for serious BR at the time but i hope to someday. caliber advice too? heard good things on 6 6.5 and 7mm. 6.5x47 sounds like the cats meow. but maybe something simpler for a first rifle

3 to 5oo yds? Depends on how recoil sensative you are.
The 600 is a fine action, the bolt handle how ever is a problem.
Most people change it to a different one either custom or 700.
If you have the bug one fine case to consider is the 6mm br series etc.
Right now they are shooting and winning, again.
Check out 6mmbr.com and go to the different sections . It may help you decide what you might like.
6.5 is good 308 great New 6mm/ 47 on the 6.5 /47 case is good dasher etc.
There are actions there too, Borden stiller etc.
Hope this helps the long range is over there.

The Rem 600 and 660 used to be one of the more popular actions to build a nice little Rifle on. The biggest complaint that most had was the bolt handle, which is really cheap looking, and the rest of the rifle, which looked cheap because they were cheap. I can remember when you darn near couldn't give one away.

That has changed. A trip to any Gun Show will tell you that these things have taken on sort of a "cult" status. Shooters would rather not chop them up just to get the action.

I owned one in 350 Rem Magnum at one time. But not for long.:D

But, make no mistake, the action its self is just a strong, and made with the same quality, as any other Rem action. In fact, the barrel tenon shares the same "three rings of steel" design that makes a Factory Remington one of the safest actions ever produced. Except for the bolt handle, the 600-660 are identicle to the more modern Model-7.

The vaunted X-P 100 was just a 600 without the magazine cut-away.

If the action has a .473 bolt face, (that's the common .243, 308, 30-06 etc), I would build a 6BR on the action. Why? Phenominol accuracy with very little hassle. There is an entire industry built around the 6BR. Great brass, great bullets, great info, and if you opt for a 1-12 twist, you can shoot up to 80 grn bullets at enough velocity to hunt deer size game, while still being able to stack 68 grn match bullets on top of one another........jackie

The 600s bring good money at the gun shows. I would sell it and use the money to buy a Mod 7 or 700SA, put a barrel, stock, and trigger in it. If you do any more than that, you better start with a custom receiver. A 6br would be hard to beat.

helpful and interesting. one problem with selling the 600 is apparently the stock has been sanded down, according to a local gun shop owner, it didn't look it to me. but i have never seen another so nothing to compare to... this to me made it seem not worth being a collector item, maybe i'm wrong but he sure didnt want it. i've heard a 700 barrel is compatable, true? or should i just keep it the way it is and start from scratch

All good advice here on the Rem 600 action. I have 2 of these actions both in BR guns. Both were prepared before I got them. My HV 600 has 2 bolts one for 6PPC and the other for my .222 barrel. My other 600 goes to my rail and goes in 3 Cruiser stocks that are all pillar bedded. The bolt has been replaced with a Burns stainless bolt PPC bolt face. My 600 makes a nice pillar bed with it's Davidson sleeve. Actually both 600's are Davidson sleeved my HV is glued in. Both 600's have Jewell trigers and were balanced and blueprinted by Ferris Pindell back in the 80's.

I would say if you have one use it but I might not seek one out instead I would look for a small Hall or small Shilen action. But that's me.
