Recoil Lug pinning..?

Have an RPA action and recoil lug - no pin.

How do I drill the recoil lug and action to take the pin?

Make a shorty barrel staub, thread it like a tennon, and use that to keep the lug and action lined up, and then drill with a drill press/milling machine?

Thanks.

I did just what you propose but I milled a flat on the stub to give me access for the drill/reamer. I used my Bridgeport. I tried to get the pins exactly in the center of the solid material between the internal thread crest and the outside diameter of the receiver.
Some custom actions simply mill a slot through the front of the receiver to accept the pin which is pressed into the lug. I prefer a clearance hole over a slot.

I seeeeeeee why there is a notch in the bottom of the receiver now! Thanks.

I was thinking of the very setup you are talking about.

Thanks..!!

I also place a little oil and very little 120 grit abrasive between the lug and the action on assembly prior to torquing the barrel... and a little grease on the shoulder of the barrel. This prevents the tendency of the lug to want to twist and break the pin or distort the pin hole. Prior to doing this I sheared a couple of pins on Holland lugs. The grit changes the headspace by about a thou so I allow for that in my calculations...

To locate a Holland lug on a 700 I use the Holland lug locating jig on the bottom of the action, and a threaded barrel stub with a small diameter allowing access to the pin hole.

Never could understand why one would want to pin the lug in the first place. I know it is very popular but I have never had a need to do it. My home made action wrench takes care of aligning the lug and I have done hundreds of them. Anyone?

pinned lug

The pinned lug makes it a bit easier to change barrels on a switch barrel rig without upsetting anything. Jkob, do you have any pictures of your action wrench? Maybe you have a better mousetrap.

I also have an action wrench that aligns stock Remington recoil lugs. Works fine, too. Sometimes folks have a switch barrel rifle that they want to swap barrels on, at the range or shooting 'dogs, and a pinned recoil lug is good on these rifles. They usually have a non-Rem lug, too.

I have never - -

had a problem torqueing barrels to actions with pinned lugs @ 100 fp. I lube the threads and shoulder of the barrel before torqueing. I use 100 Fp simply becaues the wrench I have that has been caliberated recently has a limit of 100 Fp. It seems to be sufficient to hold barrels on, even pretty big boomers.
