Recoil Lug Advice.

I recently had the need to measure an aftermarket recoil lug and found that the thickness varied by 0.003" around its circumfrence.
It was supplied brand new by a reputable manufacturer of this pinned type lug.

1) Would you use this lug:confused:

2) Have you guys come across this problem in the past or do you take it for granted that the lug is flat?

Many Thanks in advance

I had a Smith once

grind my 700 lug flat. That was cool except by doing it he made the chamber shrink by the same amount he ground off; have to re-adjust the die I use for other chambers done with the same reamer. In the grand scheme of things, 003 isn't much with regard to a recoil lug. When bedding, there is much more clearance on the forward side of the lug plugged in so me, I wouldn't be concerned about .003.

3 thou is a lot for an after market lug to be out... I haven't have used a few Holland lugs and they have all been considerably less than a thou out.

Are you sure your measurement is 3 thou and not 3 ten thou?

Remmy,

Like Dennis said if it is truly .003 and not .0003 then I would return it and just use the factory lug as it will at least that close. But at the same time I would not use a lug that was more than .001 off.

Dennis / Nick you read correctly it varys by 0.003" or 3 thou which looks well out of spec if you consider the measurement was taken in the tenon / action area an not the bedding area.

Dennis please check your PM's

I have seen a few after market lugs that were off by about .0015". Why true an action and then put on a lug that isn't flat?
I surface grind any lug that is off by .0005" or more, even that brand new after market lug.
