Rear Joy-Stick

Who's THEY? I just get lucky once in a while. The secret is the H.G. I'm using my wifes rifle, I've been able to keep it shooting now for 5 years. Don't know how many rounds a threw it, but there are a lot, say 2500 anyhow. Straightpipes If I had the ability to do the kind of work you have done with that set up, I would be DANGEROUS! Charles is another one good with machinery, he's done some nice work. Never got into that part of the game, wish I had! To late to teach an old dog new tricks. Your going to find out most of the guys an woman in this game are good about sharing ideas and helping were they can. I've been doing this for more years than I want to say. OH and the prize table is what I'm hoping I will be first in line for, big hopes!

There is more to being a heavy hitter than winning a match or setting a record. As best I can tell, Joe Salt is the guy we all have to thank so that IBS and Pennsylvania people can now shoot each others matches with common equipment. Having a common set of equipment rules will outlast any record set...

So thanks, Joe.

As for the prize table: Joe -- just get your wife to shoot the Open, & then spare her the arduous trip to the prize table after a couple long days shooting ;-)

Dangerous ya say!!

They said I was nuts when I started this thing. Everything was wrong!!! Wrong action, barrel block, wrong wood on the stock and to think an IBS shooter would use Rustoleum over a wooden stock. Then there was this "CNC" business. Yes, I could have went this direction, but I dont have it in my shop. I built it because it was all "wrong".
Hi Charles, when I put up my long colts and bed down the old mare I rode in on lets shoot some.

Who's "They?" Data, please.

You gonna toot your horn, you gotta name all these Nay-sayers. Savage actions have won at the Nationals. David Hodges, for goodness sake, uses one. Lotta wood stocks out there, in all flavors of wood. What's wrong with Rustoleum? At least you painted yours...

Don't see anything new or problematic with your rifle. It is good-looking, but that's been done before (not by me, though).

Now if you can get those quarter-minute groups at 1 K, (it's 10-shots in IBS and Pennsylvania HG), you'll have records & wins & braggin' rights aplenty.

OH shucks guys thanks, Charles that was the way it was suppose to be when I first sarted shooting 1000 yard build what ever and put all 10 shots in one hole. none of this restrictive stuff. Strightpipes Thats what Bruce at B.A.T. Actions father told him also, he could never make a living doing that! HA HA. Two of my L.G.'s have Rem.721's but they win matches now and then. Charles Kathy says she is burnt out, she never did like the ride. Thats alright though, now I got her rifle and it seems like it still wants to shoot! I have the 9th relay this weekend in both classes so thats going to be the kicker.

Joe, I guess you get my story. And I see that others have one similar to mine. If I make it to the OPEN I will look you up.

OK Charles,
I aint tootin nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are tootin it for me sir. You want to know THEY, THEY is those that claim they have all the answers. Ive asked for NO opinions HERE. Just the answer to one question. THEY are those in the shooting community that I frequent in my travels. They are the critics around the campfires and at the matches that I attend. They are the so called expert stock makers that say oak will never work. They are the barrel fitters that say the SAVAGE is junk and they wont touch them. They said the barrel clamp is DONE, and on and on.
Now where anywhere in here did I toot or brag or ask questions of this forum? The rules of the game are here, I wanted one of them answered. Thats it!! There aint no THEY in here, YET. Glad to see that the almighty IBS thinks that the Savage is a gun for christ sakes, and that you all paint with a rattle can. You see, if I wanted THEY to mean YOU, I would have said so. Now Im done TOOTIN.

You want to shoot some time or not?

You want to shoot some time or not?
7 July, Camp Butner, North Carolina, IBS 1K match. Closest one, this time of year.

That aint a challenge, by the way, I'm not shooting that well this year. But you'll find some who are. A few of the old Hawks Ridge guys, and I will be there, giving things another try. If you're retired & got someone to feed the animals, you could make it part of a trip to the World Open in Pennsylvania.

Then there are IBS Nationals in West Virginia, Labor day weekend. Like the WO, they'll be good guns apelnty there, too.

Its 4:00 am so I wont be too creative here this time of day. Had something good going and all was lost so here is the revised version. All my animals are grown, dont have to feed them anymore. Just need to stop them from harassing me. Ive asked you to shoot a couple of times, that aint no challenge either. Its all about the tools, the craft and the shooters. The nationals and records and quarter-minute groups are nice but dont come as often as friends do,ya know? I was born and raised a "craftsman". Its what I do. It can be a blessing or a curse. I hope to shoot with you sometime Charles as with alot of you....

Peace

Just go shoot and you'll know where your tools, craftsmanship, and shooting abilities stand against what's out there. You'll learn more at a real match or two than in years around a campfire or by a keyboard.

mwezell, thanks for weighing in. Im ok in the confidence part of this. Somewhere back in all of this I let out that Im not new to benchrest or competition. I needed to let Charles know my intention here. Ive built myself into benchrest for the last 20 years of my 40 years in the sport. I dont know it all, just want to make sure the door stays open to learn. I dont live in a shooting world at the keyboard, Im very much involved in it.

Now Im hoping that Ive hung out enough laundry so everyone knows why Im here. I dont have 10 years to earn my stripes with the IBS. I will be around, learning and shooting. I "do" have a few things to give back hopefully.

SP --

I think I read on 6mmBR.com that you were using a7mm WSM. Thinking on where you live -- Florida -- I'd guess there are more formal 600 yard matches near you than 1,000.

I've never shot a 7 WSM, but many-times IBS National Champion Danny Brooks has. I hope his experience was not typical, but he reports others have had the same fate, see:

http://benchrest.com/showthread.php?81816-Anyone-shooting-7-WSM&p=667460&highlight=#post667460

So, if its 600 yards you wind up shooting most, you might want to save that good 7WSM barrel for 1,000 yard matches. I wouldn't presume to tell you what's best for 600, but most guys seem to be using some variant of the 6BR.

As a contra sort, I'd think a .30 would also be good, or even a .338. A .30 about the capacity of an '06 with bullets in the 190-210 region ought to offer most of the wind advantages, and much longer barrel life. In fact, I *believe* the current 600 HG record is held by a plane-Jane .308?

Anyhow, too many of us (includes me) have gotten a really good barrel and then used it up without much thought. If/when I get one now, it gets set aside for big matches.

FWIW,

Charles

Edit: Stupid of me not to think of it -- I imagine there is a 7mm chambering that would also be good for 600 yards. Something around the capacity of a 7mm Mauser or 7mm AI? There is good brass from RWS, and Huntington's, it's rumored, is once again carrying RWS.

Charles, your right. Nothing formal at 1000 yards down here. Thats why the IBS has my attention. As I stated, tired of burning stuff up at fun shoots. I shoot 3 rifles in 7WSM. LG, HG and the old heavy is now a test bed or back up rifle. Average competitive life span is 1400 rounds. Now, the barrels at this count do "not" show any reason that they wont shoot further. Time to shoot a heavier bullet. I type slow, so ask in detail so I dont time out gabbing about things that dont interest you.

Yes, I will shoot 600 and 1000 yard matches.
