IBS 1000 yard heavy gun;

Is a rear joy-stick rest legal in this class, period? Is a rear joy-stick rest legal in the 1000 yard heavy gun class "ANY WHERE IN THE WORLD" ? I know what to do about the mood of the day........

Thank you Mr Pipes!!

I'm waiting to see an answer since the guys who write the rule books for all the disciplines do read and post here.

I love your rest and have a similar setup which uses a Farley Compact (the bazackwards one) mounted on a steel plate.

Yes a rear joy sticks are legal as long as the thing doesn't stop rearward and/or upward movement. And is on a sand bag or bags 1 1/2" wide and 3" long, used alone or may be supported on a fixed pedestal or mechanically adjusted pedestal. They use them on the front why not the back.

Joe, just because something's legal on the front does NOT mean it's legal on the back. I've also been disallowed for gluing my rear bag down to a plate but my buddy's Borden front rest is all glued together. The bag's permanently glued into the cradle. Here's one I was chastized on..... The long Gator is HEAVY and FLAT but it gets in my way. So I tried to glue a small Protector to a steel plate. It's about the same weight as the big Gator, even a similar footprint but NOT LEGAL! In fact this rear bag thing has been endlessly hashed right here over the last 15yrs...... "Skip's spacers are legal but Dohrmann's ain.'t" Well, and then they are..... and then there's Dunrud's, and Billy Bob's ho'made jobby needa a separate rulings....

IMO the rear bag rules are a mess.

BTW here's the exact cut-n-paste from page two IBS rulebook (NBRSA book is "can't get there from here")

3) The rear sandbag shall be a bag, or combination of bags containing sand only. Zirconium silicate,
known as “heavy sand”, is allowed. No other metallic sand will be used by any competitor. A vertical
spacer under the rear bag will be allowed as long as it incorporates no adjustments for windage or
elevation. The vertical spacer shall not contain any protrusions, which can be inserted into the bench
top or the sandbag. The rear sandbag shall not be contained in any manner. The rear sandbag cannot
in any way attach to the front rest.

Now hopefully this will get one of the Powers That Be involved, if nothing else just to set me straight about it being "a mess."

:)

OK, so long range rules for LIGHT GUN states "2) The rear rest must not be mechanical in nature. Bunny ear type similar bags are acceptable. "

and nothing for heavy gun.... so then straightpipes is OK for Heavy competition?

al

.Al very good now you have it. Kind of like me with Tim in Texas! So have a bag made thats not so big with 3" high ears, I did and it works. You can go up the sides of the stock in the back and still be legal.

Joe Salt

And Al, I believe NBRSA, where you shoot, allows a mechanical rear rest in LG. Not IBS or Pennsylvania, though. The OK on the mechanical rear rest for LG was one of the few differences between IBS and NBRSA rules back in 1997. As there aren't any NBRSA long-range matches around here, I haven't kept up with their rules, so it would be wise to check.

'Pipes, Joe Salt is a big gun at Pennsylvania. I'd say you're good to go for the World Open. You really should attend. It will be the biggest 1,000 yard benchrest match you'll ever get to.

Joe isn't the 1/2 inch of sand rule in effect in heavy with mechanical rest?

Yes Matt: Al was talking about light gun, my light gun bag has 3'' ears. Charles: Matt's the big gun I just let them know I'm there once and a while. Still can't win a shoot off! Guess I'll have to use the good stuff next time and not Experiment.

Sorry Im late! Now its late and Im covered in Ws2 but Im feelin playful.......... I pretty much get this joy-stick being legal in 1K heavy gun, OK. Now, if I gotta bribe certain match directors at certain ranges at certain matches, just pm me and give me the list. Price of fuel is commin down so I can afford some bettin money, OK.

Now, I think we should have a match once a year, for trouble makers like me to show of at. Lets call it "The Gamblers Shootout". Catchy !!!!! Build the most "out of bounds" cannon you can dream up and bring it on. $5000.00 to win.

Im goin shootin so dont think Im anti-social........... Play nice

Alinwa,
So what happened to the compact rear rest project?

Alinwa,
So what happened to the compact rear rest project?

I set aside as it's not legal in the competition I was shooting. I was using a Light rifle for NBRSA 600yd. My heavy gun weighs over 30lb at the butt so it collapses the rest and I haven't been able to stiffen it up. I haven't competed with the heavy gun as they've quit holding matches here.

My other guns are PPC's, Light and Heavy and in either case again the rest isn't legal so I haven't even tried it.

thanks for asking

Alinwa, its a shame things are slowing up there. If the rules will apply later, the rate or bias can be adjusted in this thing I just built.

Straightpipes: Seen your Rifle and rest on 6br, nice work are you bring that to the WORLD OPEN would like to see it in person!

Joe Salt

Well Joe Salt,
If my stuff and I prove to be worthy of the trip, I hear its the place to be at least once in life.... Thanks for wanting to see it in person.

When you get there look me up, I hope you will be impressed with the range. I know you'll be impressed with the prize table. Just from looking at your rifle and rest, if it shoots at 600 yards it should be good for 1000.

Joe Salt

OH OH,
You have me looking at the prize table already. This 1000 yard game has become a true interest for me in the last couple of years. Benchrest and the shooters involved with this part of the industry are a great experience. I speak of all the benchrest community. Its about the tools, the building and the shooters.
They say you are a heavy hitter in the 1000 yard club, Im honored to have you look my way.
