Real Dumb Question

Ya know boys and “Girls”…

This seems like an annual thing, about once a year someone brings this up. Then we all vent a bit and it sinks into oblivion…where it belongs.

When I was match directing I posted match notices and results on both this forum and on the “Official” match notices/results page. The postings on the “official” page got many less views than the same posting on this site. Let’s be honest, how many of you ever go to the official match notice page?

We overall are a very tight community and most of us like to see how our friends did in a match, and congratulate them when they did well
As someone said in an earlier post, if you don’t want to read it don’t click on it.

One other thing to consider is that there are new people coming by this site all the time, perhaps a few will see a match notice, see it is in their neck of the woods and go take a look.

So Wilbur, in answer to your Poll, please leave things as they are.

Thanks, Al

Wilbur
I agree with everything Al said.
We had a match yesterday and two of the nicest guys you ever met shot their first 250. The people that don't like match reporting here.Should have seen the joy in these guys. Jack and Joe if you read this Congratulations Again.

Wilbur,

I like the announcements and results here. Like others have said, it's nice to keep track of how your friends around the country are doing. There are some threads I have no intrest in, I just don't open them. It's not a hard concept to understand. I don't shoot ARA but, when somebody shoots a 2500, I believe it's noteworthy enough to post here. If you eliminate the announcements and results, there won't be much to read that hasn't been hashed out a dozen times already. BTW there is nothing wrong with some "funny" posts the keep it light and interesting. Sometimes we take ourselves and the games to seriously.

The one post that is irritating is the BTT post. If somebody is going to make a post at least say something.

Here's another dumb question from a new guy. Why does every thread on this forum turn into a pissing match? I personally would prefer that match results go to the match section. But I also don't have any problems with people asking how to improve the accuracy of their 10/22 or CZ.

Thanks for the info Joe...I'm off to get some round patchs...I've been worndering all season where to come up with some more points.

I think the forum heading is Rimfire Benchrest....not Rimfire Benchrest technical...or Rimfire Benchrest Equipment.

Its kind of like the non ARA match results being posted here...I just don't open them. Kind of like the self serving Calfee threads....everyone complains about them but just can't resist the temptation to open them and read them anyhow.

But I will open almost all of the ARA match results because I want to know how everyone else in the country is doing and who is hot.

I wish there were somewhere online you could get up to the minute ARA match results online. Even the matchs we compete in we would not have to stand around waiting for a slow inkjet printer to print a report for each competetor. We could just go home and print our own.

I guess if the reports were posted in the match results section I would go there...but I never do because very seldom does anyone ever post rimfire results there.

I think we can call it a little bit of a brag board also.....when you do good you want others to know....frankly I am a little let down if I do good in a match and no one posts it....I suspect most people feel that way but won't admit it.

Fred J...I am sure you are trying to get shooters to your range web site but I am interested in your match results...if they were posted here....but probably will not go to various range sites to look at invidual scores. I wish you would post yours here also in addition to your own site.

Questions on your 10-22? Savage? Just don't read it.....lets not act like a bunch of snobbs if a beginner comes in and asks what we would consider beneath us questions. It is fine to tell them about the wealth of info on rimfire central but do it in a non demeaning way.

That is at least my 2 cents.

Very well said. I will say one thing about the CZ and 10/22 posts. Many times I've noticed the person asking the question is directed to Rimfire Central. Chances are, he/she will get much better information there than here on those particular action/configurations. However, when someone is directed to those sites, it's often considered a slight or sobbery by the people here. The other choice is not to answer at all and that's usually considered the same or worse. I don't think the idea that there are action snobs here will go away simply for that reason.

My last on this subject

I guess I'll have to apologize for my efforts to invite new or past shooters to our matches at Dietzville and Cedar Pointe on the rimfire forum. Your right Cadillacjack for calling me on this. I don't announce that, our website, has been updated, in order to gain hits. We don't make any money on that club site. As a matter of fact, it's a losing proposition as far as money goes, but a wealth of appreciation from our members. I've tried posting on the Match report section of BRC, but seldom do our members go there. I will however continue to make my personal comments, like-um or not , to questions or comments, as the situation arises. That includes inviting shooter of all faith's to our up coming events, as long as they are rimfire related. Thank you Wilbur for allowing me to do it my way.
Carb: I can email you our results, but unless you have a way to read Excel files, you are relegated to go to our site to read them. Of course to could show at a match, and I print them for you if the printer is working that day.. Sometimes it decides to take a day off. Brought a new printer, now we'll see if I can do a litter better.

Don't want to cause any problems with your method of posting on your website which i really like and do look at myself, and your emailing the results out.

I would just like to offer a possible suggestion to your emailing out the results to people. How about possibly creating the results in PDF format as every computer comes with the free Adobe PDF Reader? I do this for our club when I send out the results to the club members or anyone that asks for them, as I don't know who has Excel or not. I use PrimoPDF, it is as easy to use as just selecting it as your printer and then click print, when the dialog box comes up, select where you want the file to be saved and then click on create PDF. If you decide that might be doable and need help with the program send me a PM and I will be more then happy to help you out as I use PrimoPDF almost everyday at work to PDF drawings.

Just a thought.

I must be missing something Fred. You provided a link to your range's website where the scores were posted. Where's the violation that would be such a big deal that you would need to change that? What am I missing? Are you going to jail for it?

Bill,
PDF files are not the way to go!! If someone does not have excel then they get get a small program from MSFT that will open an excel file.

You can not do anything with a PDF file except get pop ups from Adobe unless you pay $400 for their program and then get even more Pop Ups! UGH
With an excel file, even thou you do not have excel, you can copy and paste into tons of programs if you would like something more than looking at a picture.
Or if you have excel or another freeware program then you could track yours or other shpooters results.
Just My Thoughts

there's a match results forum

why not just post your results there plus e-mail them to wilbur
so he can keep track of them, the only thing i see posted there
are the centerfire results but the heading on the forum doesn't
say centerfire only. should be for all match's i was going to suggest
a match results forum but we do already have one.

I'm the new guy on the board, only been around 'bout 3 years. I also frequent other forums on the internet. I read what interests me and skim by what doesn't.

I do enjoy reading the match results. I've gotten to know some of you folks and when we don't shoot the same match on a particular weekend, I like to see how you did at the other match. And there are others that I just know by reputation and I like seeing how they are progressing.

I don't shoot ARA anymore, but I open the ARA match results to see what folks are doing. I don't read the "Congrats 'insert name here' Calfee" posts. Nothing against Bill, but I know what it's going to say, so I pass it by.

It seems that much of the interesting technical stuff is over in the Gunsmiths Corner.

So, Wilbur, if this is a poll, I say everything is just fine as it is.

Best,
Michael

Doug, just wanted to let you know I installed "xlviewer" to view Excel files when you don't have Excel and it worked great. Just used it on a Post.

Thanks for info,

Richard

Doug,

I completely forgot about that free viewer. Next time I will send out a link along with the excel file to all our members down here. Thanks for bringing it up.
Bill

Another option:

Make it a .jpg file, then you can place the image here and we can see the results without clicking on anything. :)
