The Professional Shooting League & Lapua Series Rimfire Benchrest Match

With the third PSL match soon approaching, we'd like to take a moment congratulate the past two match winners, as well as the new PSL target record holder.

PSL #1 - Rocky River Barn

The first match was held at the Rocky River Barn on February 7th, and Craig Young came out on top by X count, shooting an impressive 2270 agg score over 5 cards. Wendall Dean took second with the same score of 2270, just 11 X's shy of Craig's total. The match had a total of 102 shooters, and 67 shooters had an aggregate score of 2000 or better. Mike Sherrill, David Kenimer, and Fred Sears rounded out the top five shooters.

Craig's efforts were rewarded with a nice payout of $1800! Wendall took home $900, and there was plenty of cash spread out among the remaining top 20 shooters. As usual, the Barn was tricky for many shooters, but more than a few managed to pull out some impressive targets. The legendary Allan Hall won target 3 with an impressive score of 2400, just showing that he's still got some magic up his sleeve, and Jessica Pappas took the fifth card with a 2350!

We also had a few new faces in the crowd, including World Cup Champion prone shooter and AMU team member, Eric Uptagrafft. Eric is one of the most dominate shooters the world over in Men's Prone events, and he debuted his new rimfire action of his own design (twin front lugs!). Eric punched out a 2350 on target #2 with his rifle, and this rifle was built by one of the talented AMU gunsmiths. Our tax dollars at work! A few keen eyes noticed his engineering marvel on the bench and enjoyed a chance to chat with Eric.

PSL #2 - Piney Hill

The second match was held indoors as well, at the Piney Hill Indoor Shooting Club. There was a lot of excitement for this match since there had yet to be a perfect target shot, and the money kept rolling in for the first person to shoot a perfect 2500. And, to the amazement of many, a relative dark horse in the pack with a new Gene Davis rifle hammered out the first 2500. That shooter was Timothy Stratton, and he pocketed $750 for that fine display of "shock and awe." Good shootin' Tim!

While Tim seemed poised to make a run for the podium, one of the toughest competitors to ever get behind a rifle, Darrel Barnes, bulldozed his way to first place by landing somewhere within the top five shooters for four of the five targets shot. That level of consistency is what favors the top shooters over the long haul. Darrel's focus throughout the day paid him a handsome reward of $1600!

Dennis Drake was close on his heels, but Darrel's scores just kept adding up and he remained out of sight for the rest of the pack. Carl Dean, David Kenimer, and Brian Brandt made up the top five shooters with Darrel and Dennis. Another shooter of note, Fred Leeds, ended up in 8th place, and much of that is a direct result of his heavy investment of time and funds into the sport. Making the trip out to the PSL matches from Nevada is no small undertaking. Good shootin' Fred; your dedication to the sport is both enviable and admired.

The scores at Piney Hill were a bit higher, but that was the last indoor match of the season, and now that the PSL has moved outdoors, many expect a wider spread in scores due to the tough target mixed with outdoor conditions. There is also question as to if Tim will have the only 2500 of the season.

There is no doubt that the next 2500 will be well earned, and will require some considerable condition reading skill and rifle tuning. Again, hat's off to Tim for executing 25 individual shots perfectly!

PSL #3 - Kettlefoot, May 23rd

With that recap of the first two matches, shooters are getting ready for the next PSL match at the Kettlefoot Rod and Gun Club in Bristol, VA. This is going to be an excellent and challenging event, and since it's being held at one of the finest shooting ranges in the nation, we hope to see the shooters come out in force. The winner of Kettlefoot is going to stand apart from the rest, and arguably be one of the very best rimfire shooters in the nation on that day.

We also want to thank all the sponsors, scoring team, and everyone else behind the scenes who all make this possible for the shooters. Without their help, we wouldn't be having such great turnouts and successes. Many thanks.

Charlie

call me crazy, but this actually has to do with rimfire BR

btt, again.

Very nice Steve!

Nice to here the good stuff in Rimfire Benchrest.

Now after the third match of the year, the race for points will be on. :D

Who will win?? Will it come down to the last match, and last target??? That would be awesome!

Keep up the good work in keeping even the "spectators" involved!

Denny

a true person interested in the game

Thanks for the kind words steve. If there were more people like you we would all learn more on this forum. Thanks Fred.

You've earned it Fred. Good shootin!

Dan K and I will keep the updates going and try to make this the very best event in Rimfire BR. Dan and all the sponsors, and supporters has made the PSL something special.

But we are also missing some key players: Hebert, Leger, Gaston, and especially Hoke Kerns.

We have all be looking forward to seeing Hoke at a match, and wish him the very best in his recovery. One of the very finest Statesmen of the sport.

The PSL series events would benefit greatly from any of these fine shooters attending.

Mr. Steve -a very nice post. I'm new to rimfire and post like this helps keep the "fire a burning". I'm sure there are other newbies out here fidling with rimfire. It makes it nice to have a goal in mind -shooting in the PSL is an excellent goal, info and stories like this helps keep the that goal alive.

I'll be sitting around, after a good butt whippin by my Kimber, kinda wanting to give up figuring i ain't never gonna "get there", then read a post like yours and "bam" the Kimber is back in my hands, got it apart and back out in my barn doing something to it. The last PSL event in Waco, i'll be there as a spectator. I'm 60, never go anywhere -never never even thought about shooting in any kind of a match.

I found Rimfire Central a few years back, great bunch of guys, and got hooked on 10/22's.. lot's of info over there and i got a couple 10/22's that shoot as good as my Kimber but i figure it's gonna take a bolt gun to shoot targets at 50 yards. That's why i bought the Kimber, seemed the cheepest way to get started.

I keep thinking i'm going to "flame out". Mr. Dan comes along and starts the PSL, i sorta keep my eye on you guys - i got plenty of computer time. Wolf Target ammo was a stretch at first, then a main stay - keep reading about you guys i move up in ammo.. now SK match is the main stay. I feel i can't really tell what my Kimber is doing so i got a brick of Eley 10x, ouch that hurt.. I use it sparingly, only when i just got to know what me and my Kimber are doing. Yesterday i ordered 2 bricks of Eley team i see where some of the guys are shooting that in the PSL. Maybe one day i can at least buy a brick of Laupa, i owe 'em at least that for sponsoring the PSL.

I guess what i'm saying not to long ago CCI Blazers from Walmart was great ammo. Now look what you guys have done to me! I'm spending more on ammo than the $360 i paid for my Kimber. Now when i spend money on something i really don't need i convert it over to how much Eley would that buy. I've always like rimfire my dad gave me a wore out Winchester single shot when i was 3, still got it. I just never intended to dive in this deep. Rimfire is supose to be a toy you shoot squirrels with. What the hell happened, look what you guys here at BC and at RFC have done to me.

You guys have gotten me up off the couch, thanks! joe:)

So Joe what part of Texas are you located? We need to get you out to one of the matches if nothing more than to visit, but that won't last long for you'll want to get on the line. Anyway there's matches all over Texas, whether it's ARA or IR50/50. Hopefully your close to one of them and can come visit. Note you mentioned that you'll be attending the PSl match in Waco. There's a ARA match this coming Saturday in Waco why don't you try to make it out if it fits your schedule.

Mr Les i'm in Cleveland Tx about 50 north of Houston, i appreciate the invite -Mr. Fred J and several others have invited me to some matches. Maybe before too long i'll get out of the house. Look for a guy with a brown paper bag over his head and a kIMBER.. I'll be know as the "Unknown Shooter", lol. thanks joe:)

ammo cost

joe

that ammo cost does get to you doesnt it? that has been the hardest thing for me to accept and i cry everytime i send a bullet down the range. don stith suggested eley club and it really doesnt shoot too bad.

i am close to grafs and get it for 5.69 a bax wholesale. i tried some lapual l but i cant really see that much difference between the 2.

every once in a awhile i go back and try my walmart stash and it shoots unbelievabley bad in a good rifle. just part of the game i guess.

good shootin

Sounds good Joe we'll keep a eye out for you. There's a group that shoots ARA over in Madisonville not to far from your neck of the woods. I haven't seen them posted on the ARA schedule for this year, but also haven't heard that they aren't having matches either. If they do could be close enough for you to make a trip to at least see what's going on.

Ahhh just read Don's post so I was just repeating info.

Take Care,
Les

No matches

It's sad, but NO MATCHES UAR Madisonville this year. Joe, you'll just have to drive a little farther to shoot in a match. Great tournaments coming up in May at New Braunfels. You stated that you were 60 years old, and I has the feeling that you felt you were too old to start shooting Bench Rest. Let me tell you Joe, I've shot against some that were 90, so you still have 30 years of shooting left if you start now. But then there that notion, that if you wait till all the light in town are green, it not safe to leave the house.
