The Professional Shooting League & Lapua Series Rimfire Benchrest Match
With the third PSL match soon approaching, we'd like to take a moment congratulate the past two match winners, as well as the new PSL target record holder.
PSL #1 - Rocky River Barn
The first match was held at the Rocky River Barn on February 7th, and Craig Young came out on top by X count, shooting an impressive 2270 agg score over 5 cards. Wendall Dean took second with the same score of 2270, just 11 X's shy of Craig's total. The match had a total of 102 shooters, and 67 shooters had an aggregate score of 2000 or better. Mike Sherrill, David Kenimer, and Fred Sears rounded out the top five shooters.
Craig's efforts were rewarded with a nice payout of $1800! Wendall took home $900, and there was plenty of cash spread out among the remaining top 20 shooters. As usual, the Barn was tricky for many shooters, but more than a few managed to pull out some impressive targets. The legendary Allan Hall won target 3 with an impressive score of 2400, just showing that he's still got some magic up his sleeve, and Jessica Pappas took the fifth card with a 2350!
We also had a few new faces in the crowd, including World Cup Champion prone shooter and AMU team member, Eric Uptagrafft. Eric is one of the most dominate shooters the world over in Men's Prone events, and he debuted his new rimfire action of his own design (twin front lugs!). Eric punched out a 2350 on target #2 with his rifle, and this rifle was built by one of the talented AMU gunsmiths. Our tax dollars at work! A few keen eyes noticed his engineering marvel on the bench and enjoyed a chance to chat with Eric.
PSL #2 - Piney Hill
The second match was held indoors as well, at the Piney Hill Indoor Shooting Club. There was a lot of excitement for this match since there had yet to be a perfect target shot, and the money kept rolling in for the first person to shoot a perfect 2500. And, to the amazement of many, a relative dark horse in the pack with a new Gene Davis rifle hammered out the first 2500. That shooter was Timothy Stratton, and he pocketed $750 for that fine display of "shock and awe." Good shootin' Tim!
While Tim seemed poised to make a run for the podium, one of the toughest competitors to ever get behind a rifle, Darrel Barnes, bulldozed his way to first place by landing somewhere within the top five shooters for four of the five targets shot. That level of consistency is what favors the top shooters over the long haul. Darrel's focus throughout the day paid him a handsome reward of $1600!
Dennis Drake was close on his heels, but Darrel's scores just kept adding up and he remained out of sight for the rest of the pack. Carl Dean, David Kenimer, and Brian Brandt made up the top five shooters with Darrel and Dennis. Another shooter of note, Fred Leeds, ended up in 8th place, and much of that is a direct result of his heavy investment of time and funds into the sport. Making the trip out to the PSL matches from Nevada is no small undertaking. Good shootin' Fred; your dedication to the sport is both enviable and admired.
The scores at Piney Hill were a bit higher, but that was the last indoor match of the season, and now that the PSL has moved outdoors, many expect a wider spread in scores due to the tough target mixed with outdoor conditions. There is also question as to if Tim will have the only 2500 of the season.
There is no doubt that the next 2500 will be well earned, and will require some considerable condition reading skill and rifle tuning. Again, hat's off to Tim for executing 25 individual shots perfectly!
PSL #3 - Kettlefoot, May 23rd
With that recap of the first two matches, shooters are getting ready for the next PSL match at the Kettlefoot Rod and Gun Club in Bristol, VA. This is going to be an excellent and challenging event, and since it's being held at one of the finest shooting ranges in the nation, we hope to see the shooters come out in force. The winner of Kettlefoot is going to stand apart from the rest, and arguably be one of the very best rimfire shooters in the nation on that day.
We also want to thank all the sponsors, scoring team, and everyone else behind the scenes who all make this possible for the shooters. Without their help, we wouldn't be having such great turnouts and successes. Many thanks.
