For barreling a 1.25" OD barrel 30" long.

Which would be better for action threads?

1.062"x18tpi or 1.125"x16tpi

Or does it make a difference if done properly.

There has to be a formula:

the Engeneer Types who frequent here are sure to point you to one :), it's where they live :D

There may be an answer in Machinerys Handbook. Just speaking for me, I think a longer fine thread would be stronger than a shorter course thread. I remember seeing a chart in Machinery's handbook for the length of threads for bolts; why I suggested you could look there.

:confused:If done properly, you fit the barrel to the action, not the action to the barrel. Go with whats in the Action you are using. The fit is likely to be better that way. And be sure to tighten it up.

Now for the answer you were really looking for... If you are trying to choose an action based on the use of that barrel, you have to buy an action what fits in the sport you are building for. 30" barrels are used for Palma guns, and 1000 BR guns, but not much else. 1000 yard br guns are built like heavy Bench or Unlimited Bag guns, or even like rail guns. Right bolt left port is common, smooth actions like BAT are used. and they either have a massive action with big barrel tenon or they have a smaller action and a barrel block, in which case the action doesn't hold that heavy barrel, the block and the barrel hold the action. Palma is another story, smaller actions right bolt, right port smaller stocks and smaller barrel contour. Pandas are quite common as are the grizzley and other Remington clones and the odballs, but nothing real heavy.

For most cartridges, I'd rather have the 1 1/16" diameter thread. For cartridges that are large in diameter such as .338 Lapua or .378 Wtby based cartridges, I'd rather have the 1 1/8" diameter thread. I've built rifles that used smaller cases ( 6x47 Lapua, 6.5-284, .284 and others that sized) on 1 1/8" threads. For a good read on why you want a 1 1/8" thread on the larger cartridges go to Dan Lilja's article on the .378 Weatherby in a Remington 700 action.
