Questions about barrel contour rules

Not a stupid question and I still can't see how Boyd read what he did into the rules. It says that the barrel can't have over 5" straight at a 1.250 diameter and at that 1.250 point it tapers to .900 at 29". It does not say the taper starts at the boltface. It couldn't because the barrel would be illegal if the taper started at the boltface. If any part of the barrel was 1.250 beyond the boltface it would be outside the taper rule.

Butch....buddy, did you go look at the picture? It is a part of the rule statement, just as the narrative is. It clarifies their intent. Pictures are a great idea. I work in construction. I would hate to have to do estimates using only written descriptions. BTW the original question was just fine...nothing even slightly stupid about it.

After all the info has been posted -----

I'd lean toward 24" of taper because of:
1) The IBS and NBRSA drawings suggest so, in spite of my inability to nail down the intent the wording.
2) A look at the contour chart and drawing on the Krieger site also suggests a 24" taper.

I'm far from a good information source on such things but I interpret the intent of the rules is to define a set of maximum diameter dimensions and a minimum length dimenstion of 18".

I interpret this to be an outline that all barrels must fall within----don't even have to be straight taper as long as it falls inside the outline. Again this is one person's interpretation and I like Jackie's take on it----comfortable and simple to trust the barrel maker.

Who knows ? Certainly not me.

The Varmint Rifle diagram on page 113 of the New Rules makes it clear (at least for a Varmint rifle). 5" at 1.25" and then 24" tapering to 0.900 at the 29th inch.

First time that I have seen the photo of the drawing. I still contend that it is not written as shown. It really ain't no big deal as we have correct blanks from our suppliers as noted above.
