question on whether or not there's a class for me?

hi folks

i was wondering if anyone could steer me towards whether there's a competitive class of shooting i might shoot in? i've looked around on the internet and found many different classes but not anything particularly suited to me. is there a class where people shoot either sporting or tactical type rifles from a benchrest? i know there is a class for tactical where you shoot from prone on the ground but i am unable to do that. i also know there are classes where you shoot benchrest heavy custom built guns. i'm interested in shooting from the bench because i am slightly handicapped and can't lay on the ground and get up and down. i used to shoot many different types of firearms and specifically trap, but because of a major car crash which necessitated my having 35 operations and learning how to walk and talk again about the only type i could do is something where i would sit at the bench. this would be something that allows me to still be able to shoot. i'm also interested in shooting a rifle i already own which would be either a colt sauer 30-06 or another sporter. i don't have a good scope for doing long range shooting and understand i need to buy something like a tactical or benchrest scope, but at least for now i'd like to use one of the rifles i already own and i have this practically new sauer which for a sporter is very accurate. if i am able to do this type of shooting and like it i do see what i call a varmint type gun in a different caliber looming large in my future but not right now.

i belong to a club where i can drive right up to the range so that makes it possible for me to do it and not be forced to walk too far and thought it might be fun once in a while to go to other places and shoot and was wondering if there was a class that i could try. i have no thouhts that i could win but thought it might be fun to get out and mingle and try. i already own front and rear benchrest stuff and a good quality spotting scope and have been a reloader for many decades and enjoy building loads

any info or help or if someone could direct me to a place on the internet would be greatly appreciated

thanks

les

Varmint for score in a club setting comes to mind. There is usaully a
factory or modified class you can participate in.

Check your local ranges for more info.

IBS doesn't have a "factory" class,, BUT most clubs do!
At MGGOA Twin Oaks Range in dublin we have 2-3 different class's your gun would fit into. Elberton County Gun Club, Pinetucky Gun Club and the one in Riedsville NC also include a factory class on match days. I bet somewhere in your area there's one, keep looking and watch this site, when I first started I went to a IBS match with a factory varmit gun to jump start my learning experence, you'll be amazed at how helpful and friendly the people are.

A 30-06 is going to pound your upper body too much to be enjoyable for shooting off a bench. You should think about a 223, 22-250 or a 243. You could buy a Savage for $400 or less and be way ahead of the game.

You should also keep your eyes open for a used 36x scope. For your first match you could probably borrow one. I actually shot my first BR match with a $150 8>32 tasco on my Savage. Today I shot my 22 rf BR rifle with that same scope on it.

You can try USBR Rimfire Benchrest... there is a factory sporter class (CZ452, Anschutz 1700, Remington 541 etc).

We found out that it is a good place to start and eventually a shooter becomes more interested in accuracy and go to a Custom class, rimfire or centerfire.

Have I got a deal for you. This Sunday McDonald Sportsmens Assoc has our monthly score shoot at 9:00 am, it is a bring what ya got shoot what ya brung match 2 classes Factory and Custom and 2 distances 100&200 Meters if you are interested let me know where you are coming from and I will give you directions.

Les,

When you say "i don't have a good scope for doing long range shooting and understand i need to buy something" I take this to mean that you DO have a scope?? As long as you have something that goes over 6 power you'll be fine for 100-200yd stuff. If I were you I'd try some matches and if you find a fine group of guys then maybe focus your first "upgrade funds" on some things like bedding/floating the rifle and such, accuracy tricks. Man, I gotta' tell ya...... just the joy of shooting with like-minded accuracy fanatics FAR outweighs the subject of "winning".

unfortunately, i can't do any shooting for a while. i have a broken arm.... :(

i'd be coming from north of pittsburgh pa

i'd be good i think for 100 yards.... i have a swarovski 3x9x36 on a 30-06 colt sauer that i would use.

You can still see what is going on if you want to come out. North of PGH is a big area if you can be a little more specific ( I'm near 79, 60, turnpike, etc..) I can get good directions to you.

i'm right by cranberry and exit 28 (old exit 3) of the turnpike. i live in wexford

Ok 79 S to rt 60 west (can't remember the exit number) take 60 to 22 west to the McDonald exit. Turn Right on 980 stay on 980 until you come to a stop sign at the "T" turn Right go about 1.6 miles look for signs on the right side. The road is right before Pyramid Supply turn right follow dirt road to right to steel gate turn left the up hill we will be there from about 8:00 finish about 1:00 Come on out and let me know if you are going to show.
