Merry Christmas & and happy New Year, Joel and Steve
Steve,
Yes, I used to used Federal GM brass in the 300 Win Mag, but since I haven't been able to buy it post Sept. 11th, I have currently switched to RWS. It is a bit pricier than the Federal, but, I have not lost a case due to primer pockets, pressure rings, or split necks.
Now that they are not importing to the USA, I will have to find a substitute for the 300 Win Mag.
I believe that any brand of brass will do, but you get what you pay for except for Norma. I have some in 7mm Rem Mag. and the primer pockets are very loose after three firings. The Winchester brass does not until about six times. I can buy four Winchester cases for the price of one Norma.
But I have never had a case swell up in front of the belt as the guys were talking about. Even in a foctory gun. Then again I am not trying to push the bullets at speeds that it may hit Mars if I aim high enough.
As far as headspace guages, go no go, they were used one time on one of my light guns. I ended up with about .016" of headspace. When we set it back, I told the smith to use a virgin case instead of the guage. Plus, the reamers are very minimum SAMMI spec.
I will look forward to seeing you this year, so we can share a drink or two after a match.
