We've been trying to take a good picture of the stainless steel rail gun with a 32" 30br barrel. I never realized how difficult it was to take a good picture. Here it goes....
Jim,
Looks like a pretty piece of work. If you open a free account at a picture hosting site like Imagecave, you can upload your image and then make a copy that is 650 or so pixels wide and then copy and paste the ezcode associated with the picture just below the text in a message composition window for this thread. The you can show your work in greater detail, or if you want to make it easier on those with slow internet connections you can post a link to the picture that requires that the viewer click on it to open the picture. The following is an example of image size and detail. It shows a coil spring inside a drop tube, used to slow the powder for more compact filling of a case.
Everything I have read says 22" is the optimum barrel length with the 30BR and their isn't much advantage over that. What bullet do you plan to shot and what speed are you achieving?
I'm shooting Cheek 118 bullets and primarily 4198 powder so far. Last Saturday was the first outing. The reason the barrel is so long is so I can try out the 30 br and then rechamber it to a different configuration of 30 and try it. I thought the best test of the 2 cartridges was to try them out of the same barrel.
I didn't take a chrograph last weekend but I would doubt the exit speed would be any faster. Actually, it may be a little slower.
I used to think there was a negitive effect when you used a barrel block but I've change my mind. I've had my hat handed to me way too often by them.
I have several actions long enough to clamp the actions instead of the barrel and after 20 years the only advantage I've seen is in changing barrels.
I have started using a nylon sleeve but I don't see much difference there either.
