pacific coned bolt for Rem 700

With the Pacific coned bolt, you loose the counter bore the the bolt nose would fit into. If you made a Remington bolt coned like the Pacific, you would have to fill in from the front outside edge of the lug to the end of the bolt nose. With this solid there, there is no counter bore.
 
You can cone a Remington bolt.

I can't imagine why one would need to "lose the three rings of steel" just from coning. I see this as a separate choice. What am I missing????

I am with you on this Al... You only need to cone a bolt a small amount for the case head to feed into the extractor and seat against the bolt face more easily. How far off center is the chamber to require this ''coned bolt'' ? You don't need to replace or drastically alter the 700 bolt.

Are you talking about the inside of the bolt nose?

Yes. I see no reason to cone the outside of the bolt.

If coning simply means cutting the front lugs at an angle and matching the rear of the barrel to that angle, I think that is a fix of something not broken.

Yes, the outside is what I have been talking about, and that is what the PTG bolts are. Does it help? I am sure it can't hurt the feeding, and it may just help it in some instances. I wouldn't go out and get a coned bolt just for that feature. I had planned on the PTG bolt for the build I am doing, and the coned bolt is just something different to try.
 
My guess is that it would not help feeding at all on a 700 action.

My guess is this alteration was probably originally done when bolts were altered for the PPC case... which requires altering the 700 bolt drastically. At that point it is simple to cone the lugs and machine the barrel...

I am not referring to custom actions... only factory 700's.
 
As was earlier mentioned, coning assists in letting slim cartridges (222, .223, .222mag, 6X47, 6PPC....etc) slip into the magazine FROM A RAMP. The welded or epoxied singleshot ramps are set quite low, for one to be able to throw rounds in and slam the bolt home when running one must relieve the rear of the barrel and "cone the bolt" to make up the difference.

Talk to any older competitor about the perils of competing with a souped up Remington that WASN'T coned and you'll hear horror stories that'll curl your viscera.....
