Outsider Looking In...

Have been on this forum for only a short time, and have been back to shooting only a short time after a long time (>30 yrs) and wanted to share my impression of the importance of the sport and this site.

I have not participated in match, or even a shoot for that matter, but did observe the Denton Match last weekend. Many of the names I have come across in my reading were at that match or post on a regular basis on this forum. The offers to help me get started in bench rest, or to help me improve my own shooting by the guys in Denton was pretty great. I see those same qualities in many who post here.

There seems to be a lot of discussion about a new class - Varmint for Score, that brings many different views to the table. And while I understand that there is short range (point blank I think is one way you refer to it) which is 100/200 and 300 yd score and agg (group), then there is long range 600-1000yd, plus the F-Class with it's 2 separate class, well it is sort of over my head.
At first I felt like there was not a place for me, a guy with a .223 varmint gun, but after more reading and the visit with the guys in Denton I can see that even if I do not go down the 6PPC path, there is a lot to be learned from spending time on this site and with a group of bench rest shooters.

My initial reason for purchase of my rifle was to see how well I could shoot it, and I continue to do that. But now I want to get more from myself and the rifle to see the difference a hand load has over a factory load.

So, all this rambling is a way to say Thanks to all of you from all of us who really don't know what bench rest is all about and to say consider those who either do not want to/or can not really stretch the $ to get into bench rest completely. So we shoot a factory rifle, and maybe hope to improve it with a better barrel or tune it up so that one day we will feel like we are ready to jump in we will have a better foundation.

It seems like interest in shooting sports has picked up so maybe now is a good time to open new doors to get some of us in. Not asking to change anything, just let others know (like the guys in Denton did for me) that it is OK to bring that factory varmint gun in and sit next to the guy shooting the PPC and let the learning begin.

Thanks,

Welcome and hope to see you at one of the matches. Bring whatever you have and I'm sure you will get plenty of help. Several guys have started that way.

You can have a lot of fun with that .223 varmint rifle. You can figure out how to pillar bed it. You can learn how to make the best possible ammunition for it. You can make some wind flags and learn something of how to speak their language. ( When you get that one figured out, you can teach me.) You can master technique at the bench. You can do all of this within your current budget, and have a lot of fun while you are at it. Oh, and there is one thing that you don't need to learn....how to write a good post. Have fun.

I have shot my 223 at the club matches at Denton and held my own with the big boys. But I did go to a 30 br. As some have said and others will say come and shoot and participate. You will suprise yourself.

Club matches

At some of the club matches, there is a place for most everyone. A couple of weeks ago at the Tomball match, in factory, there were a couple of .308's, a 22-250, and the guy next to me was shooting a .300 Win Mag. There were even a couple of braked rifles but they were moved off to one end to minimize the blast. So come on out the the club matches and have a good time with what you have.

WELCOME!!

And revel in the fact that no matter the differences, no matter the disciplines, no matter the fact that sometimes feelings and egos do surface....... :)

You my friend are in the presence of SHOOTERS! These guys, TO A MAN, would throw rocks if they had to. And TO A MAN each and everyone here has traveled and/or is traveling a similar road.

Shoot what'cha' brung and hang with some nice folks....... if you enjoy yourself half as much as I have meeting some of these guys it's all worth it.

but be aware, it's a slippery slope! Worse than gambling......

but a better crowd....

maybe?? :D

LOL

Actually, I'm with Boyd. You can thoroughly enjoy yourself without breaking the bank.

most of all, have fun.

Thanks for the replys and encouragement. Just like the guys I met in Denton, nothing but good folks.

yes al, these guys are SHOOTERS which is what makes it so great! Watched them in Denton with a scope and all I could think was dang these guys can shoot!!

I'll 2nd that

Mike,

Let me tell you how I got addicted... I mean hooked... I mean introduced to bench rest shooting. It was Joe Duke himself, that spent countless emails telling me how the Tomball shoot went. I live here in DFW, but never even knew there were places around here that you could shoot. I noticed his post on 6mmbr.com and started whipping him with questions. He answered every one, and I drove down to Tomball in Jan to shoot. I had a stock 308, and no one laughed at me, and everyone was awesome to meet.

I have never been to Denton to shoot, as I just found out they have matches around here. I'll be checking into that as soon as deer season is over since I'm mostly a deer hunter that likes to shoot guns as best I can.

P1,
See there are 2 matches left at Denton. See schedule:
Sept 13 200 score morning, 200 group in afternoon
Nov 8 100 score morning, 100 group in afternoon
You will learn more there the deer hunting.

Thanks LEW

I'm out on the 13th as I will be down at Waco on the 12th on my first long range shoot (I think you're promoting it). I may be in for Nov 8th. Even though that is opening weekend, I'm skipping opening weekend this year due to the moon phase.

I'm VERY interested in learning to shoot more and better. That's why I'm now browsing thihs website too. :D

When I attend the range to shoot my 223Rem most of the guys I know there are competitive benchresters with all the good equipment and skill. Everyone of them is more than willing to pass on information and help in anyway they possibly can. Yeah, I get a ribbing every now and then about when am I going to get a benchrest rifle but it's all good natured and in good fun. The comaraderie makes it even more enjoyable to attend.
