I shoot with a James Pappas rest
Thank you Jack for your faith. I have to agree that the one piece rests that we have built out of wood work quite well if we use a top with good windage adjustments. We started this way, we took a good look at the Pappas rest and took a few good points that he had incorporated in his and put them in our project. We found that a Hoen adjustable top made the rest just about perfect. Our wood rest is easier to move because it is lighter and some great scores have been shot off of them. We have just made a few for our friends and will not produce them commercially.
The James Pappas rest has a windage adjustment that moves the whole rifle, undisturbed. In other words, the front support and the back support move together. That feature is better than what I could come up with in wood without increasing the weight greatly. I probably understand the Pappas rest as well as anyone because I have studied and copied it. James has thought of almost everything. Great bearing surfaces for smooth movement and sturdy connections.
I have been to his shop. As far as wood working, James is a true professional wood worker by trade and one of the two or three best I have met in my 50 years in this line of work. If I knew him better I might think even more highly of him. Yet, he chose metal to make the best one piece rest he could.
What do I think? I shoot with a James Pappas rest.
