Old Hart Action... Query

Hello
I have aquired a complete Hart rifle with a Hart No. 2 action. These have a cantilever extension on the receiver ring for the long scopes of years gone by.
I wish to remove this extension without hurting the originality of the action.
Does anyone know how they are attached before I make a start?
Thank you

That looks a beautiful rifle! If that mount is original equipment, I'd let it be. Just my 2¢ USD.

From what I see it is all original. I am "fussy" Fussy and have thought of a subtle restoration, mainly with bluing.
If I am going to hurt the action I will leave it as is. It is true history, not sure how many the Hart's built.

Cam,

I think you will find the cantilever mount is simply clamped between the front of the receiver ring and the barrel shoulder. If you remove the barrel, the mount should slip right off the barrel shank. There is a possibility the mount provides a recoil lug in the bedding. In any event, you will need to fabricate a "spacer/lug" equal the the thickness of the "mount lug" to maintain proper head space on your rifle. If the action is glued in (which I doubt)you may have to unglue it to do the modification.

That mount is looking more and more handsome every minute. LOL!

I emailed Hart. They came back with a prompt reply.
The cantilever is threaded to the outside of the front receiver ring.
I will be leaving it on. This action is actually smoother to work and timed correctly compared to some of the so called custom actions now available.

I have never heard a disparaging word

about the Hart action and wonder why they didn't make more of them??? A friend waited a long time for one but it never mterialized. Seems to me a lot of money was left on their table. Sure have been a bunch of other customs come along behind them and seemed to do OK at it.

Excellent! Send group photos when you get it all sorted.

Their prime liability was they were heavy but wete nice compared to the sleeved 600's & 700's. Right about that time we got the Halls, Witchita 1375, and the Panda which sealed their fate in terms of popularity.

That sheds some light - - It was recent history when my shooting friend ordered one for an HBR rifle, which they made some of but after a couple of years, he opted for something else. I think I recall that one of the Boyer HV rifles is a Hart?
