Nice day, and nice turnout at Tomball.

We had a great day for our fourth Club Match of 2013 at Tomball. A little hot, and really humid, but come on, it is August in Houston.
We had 40 shooters, a couple shot two classes, so 42 paid entry's. The conditions were not bad, but not bad at Tomball can be very deceiving. In the end we had to use the tie breaker to determine the top 4 places in the Benchrest Class.

As a special note, the top X count was not in the Benchrest Class, but in the Modified Class were Larry Saavendra recorded a great 250 21 x to capture the win in Modified.

The results:

Factory Class:
Paul Dermody.......233 5x
Brad Hodges.........215
Aaron Pullum........199 1 x

Modified Class:
Larry Saavendras..250 21x
Mike Wall.............248 11x
Tim Peck..............243 3x

Benchrest Class:
Gary Walters.........250 20x
Brandon Johnson....250 20x
Dale Metzger..........250 19x
Geramo Villarreal.....250 19x
Eddie Carter...........250 18x
Catalin Loghin.........250 18x

We had a total of 22 250's shot, showing tha shooters are really putting forth a great effort in these matches at a tough range to shoot.

Thanks to all of the shooters who came out, and to The Tomball Gun Club for allowing us to hold these
Matches.......jackie

Now where is that "Is Benchrest Dying" thread ????????

Good job JS for putting on these matches and generating interest. The interaction between the match director and the shooters and among the shooters is critical to ongoing success. 40 shooters would overwhelm me . 10 to 12 is what I would like to get to. How many benches do you have ?

My First Match

This was my first match. I shot a tactical .308 Win built by David Rooney. I was using a 14X scope, virgin brass, 168 SMK's seated to magazine length. Managed to eek out a 236. Not even close to placing among these top notch shooters. But as they say, I'm hooked!

Very nice meeting everyone. What a great bunch of guys. Help and advice to the Newbie was abundant and much appreciated. Thanks to Jackie. You are a class act and put on a very fine match.

Not taking anything away from the great job that Jackie and the Tomball gunclub are accomplishing..but Houston and surrounding areas have a population of well over 2 million people..drawing 40+ shooters with some coming from the Austin area as well..is a small ratio in a state that promotes guns sports..

we have a population of just under 100,000 and still cannot get 3-4 shooters to make a match...but if we had 20 times the population
we could draw maybe 60-80 shooters..

Oh well...

I have made that point myself. Houston is the 3d largest city in the Nation, we should have a waiting list to get in a match.

But, you take what you can get. .........jackie

What time did your match start and what time did the match results get posted ??

Also, iirc you are not shooting which makes the match run smoother and quicker as the MD isn't perpetually distracted as when he is trying to run the match AND compete. It's a heck of a sacrifice you are making imo, to spend a day at the range so others can have a well run match.

When Jackie first started holding these matches, he was getting only 6 or 8 shooters. But, he made a commitment to hold the matches on a regular schedule and provide a venue for everyone who wanted to shoot a match under strict safety rules but a bit more relaxed on the equipment. It took a while for it to build up but after several years, now you see the attendance he has been able to attract. Yes, he is drawing from the greater Houston area but some of us regularly travel a long way to shoot the match. Unfortunately I was not able to make the last match.

Jackie runs a great match. The atmosphere is relaxed, the range calls are precise, if you need a little more time,OK. A club shoot which can attract,(F) World recored holder,& Hall of famer, & State champion, and first timers. You gotta be doing sunptit' right. My hat is off to Jackie for what he is doing! Come and see, first Sun in Oct. Last club match of 2013. See ya there.
