I saw a note on rimfire about a new carbon BR scope. Anybody hear about this????

Sure

That has been floating around for more than a year.
My opinion. If the add does not say "guaranteed to hold Point of Aim", then it is of no use to the Benchrest Community.........jackie

Other than potential impact problems, I can't think of any reasons carbon fiber casings shouldn't work as well as aluminum but I can't see how there is enough weight to be saved to be worth the trouble. A few ounces maybe?

Jackie, not sure if it is naïve or arrogant to make a statement like this but if valid, what products do we currently have, use and expect 100% guaranteed results from in benchrest?

If we had this type of performance from every other component that we currently use, half the volume on this forum would be unnecessary, and we’d have a lot of people shooting and tying for top honors. I am not naïve enough to believe that, nor am I arrogant enough to expect that.

Jim Carmichel and a couple others have used them since at least last year.

There will be a second iteration of the Leupold carbon fiber scopes being used at the 2008 Super Shoot. It also will have a 32mm tube.

According to a Leupold source, the main thrust for the carbon fiber body is twofold, first for stability of the scope body in extreme temperature changes. And, secondly, Leupold is an important supplier of military optics and thus the source of the demand of carbon fiber strength and structural integrity.

hhmmmmmm
first post...and questioning jackie ????
thinks brave or naive........
me thinks you should do some searches on jackie and optics......
not arrogant at all when his modified scopes don't change point of aim.

Congrats Mustafa, you've probably earned a spot on Jackie’s ignore list.

I cannot speak for the March Scope, as I do not own one. Their selling point is that they finally solved the POA shift problem as it pretains to 100-200 yard Benchrest. That is stepping out on the limb because no other manufacture even mentions it specifically. All you read is, "lens coatings, tracking, clear optics, etc".
But I can speak for frozen scopes. Since I started using my own frozen 36x Leupolds over three years ago, I can honestly say that I have not had any problems that are related to Point of Aim shift.
I know that is a bold statement. But all I can go on is the results in the many matches I have shot.........jackie

What military does Leupold supply. I thought they stopped suppling the U.S. military years ago. Am I wrong??

100% guarantees

Jackie, I certainly appreciate the fact that eliminating the scope worry, real or imagined would improve performances at the bench for many of us. Any nagging feeling, questioning of equipment and lack of confidence in a component is a sure way to send one’s performance plummeting at the bench. I think most of us have probably been there.

Having said that, we don’t seem to expect and require 100% performance statements from other manufacturers and their products. I just find it to be a bit too “bold” to make a statement of “being of no use to the BR community” when shooters are using and winning with many products that do not have the 100% guarantee.

Guys,
Mustafa has been around the block. He has probably shot and been associated with firearms a lot more than 95% of the people on this forum. Please don't judge him because of the amount of posts that he has made. I am not knocking Jackie, as he is a friend. I just want you to know that Mustafa ain't a rookie.

Perfect performance as to "point of aim" and "stability" are what we expect in any scope that is designed, sold, and advertised for "competition" use. These scopes sell for high prices and most of the manufactures know the target market they are competing for and design their products accordingly. However, it doesn't take long for the competitors to weed out those that don't live up to their hype. And...they disappear from the line or are improved upon until they do perform as advertised. Perfection IS what is expected in this particular shooting discipline and our efforts to achieve it are recognized throughout the rest of the shooting community. That is why so many shooters come to us for accuracy advise. When makers can't make products that perform to our standards, we improve on them or make them ourselves. That is where custom barrels, custom actions, custom triggers, custom stocks, custom bullets, frozen scopes, and external adjustment scope mounts have come from. The major manufacturers couldn't make them good enough, so some of the more talented of us did.;)

Keep'm small....virg

100 percent

Mustafa, for years we were told that the scope was always the weakest links in our quest to shoot sub .200 aggs. Now, many of us have gone to great lengths, in the past couple of years, taking matters into our own hands, to finally come up with something that is 100 percent reliable in holding POA. The scope manufacturers would not give us what we wanted, so we stepped up to the plate. To many, we are borderline heretics.

Though I do not know you personally, I certainly respect your view. And I see your point. But when it comes to scopes and Benchrest, we can settle for nothing less than 100 percent, because at this level, that is what Benchrest demands.........jackie

Thanks Jackie

The significance of the quality and dependability of scopes (and dozens of other components) does not escape me. As BR shooters, striving for 100% in personal and equipment performance is what keeps bringing us back to the line.

And thanks Jackie, I feel like I know you well after following this forum for several years. I particularly like your philosophy of making the competitive BR arena the proving ground for ideas and equipment. For that reason, I am not prepared to accept a blanket statement about what is of use, or not to the BR community. I just have to look as far as the top 15’s equipment list from the last Super Shoot to see that people achieve success with many different combinations of equipment and components.

Many years ago I proudly purchased a limited edition firearms print at an SCI convention, one of 25. The photographer by the name Mustafa Bi... get the picture.

So how much does an "unfrozen" 36x Leupold "shift" from shot to shot?

Just enough to put that "dumb shot" a little closer than it would have been.
And why couldn't that shift move the "dumb shot" back into the group?

Remember your analysis of my 300 and 500 yard egg shoot targets several years ago? This was where I had a smaller 500 yard group than the 300 yard group and you said that at 500 yards I was missing the condition and the shots were blowing back into the group!!
