James H. "Jim" McGowin is the owner of a new NBRSA World Record. The certificate, issued by the NBRSA dated April 24, 2008, states:

This certificate is awarded to

James H. "Jim" McGowin

in recognition of establishing a World Record in

Unlimited 5-Shot 300 yard small group - .3551

Established at St. Louis, Missouri, April 24, 2008

Congratulations Jim, way to go !

For his record group, Jim used his own 63 grain BT bullet, a 7.5 ogive made on J-4 .750 jackets in a Niemi die. No other information is available at this time. What cartridge was Jim shooting? (Get this!)

The 6MM BEGGS  :D

Several months ago, here on the forum someone stated in regards to the then recently introduced 220 & 6mm Beggs cartridges,

"Maybe someday something will come along that will give the PPC some competition but I don't believe it will be this 'Little fella.'

Sometimes the little underdog is underestimated; huh? :) Well done Jim, I'm proud of you.

Congratulations !!!!!

Question ..... what was the previous record and by whom?

Previous record......

..was shot by Art Freund, on 7/11/1981. The target scored at .373

Very nice group indeed, only question how did they measure it... .3551 that forth digit being measured on paper is odd, especially when the allowance for a scorer when scoring is .009 plus or minus. All the same, .355 is a very nice group at 300 yards, congrats.

So Fast?

How did this group get measured and certified so fast? Very un-NBRSA like.

Usually takes a year or better. Must have pulled some strings.

Good shooting Jimmy.

Paul, I believe the fourth digit is the result of agging the measurements of everyone on the measuring committee. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Congratulations to the new record holder and to the bullet maker!
Beating a record that has stood for 27 years and 10 days and knowing all of the competitions and competitors who have tried to beat that record during that time makes this accomplishment even more remarkable!
Congratulations again.
My question is this - is the 0.3551 record measurement in inches?
Or is it in M.O.A.?
None of the posts alludes to the measurement being in inches or M.O.A. - or the "leeway" being in inches or M.O.A. (".009 plus or minus").
I am assuming its being defined in inches but want clarification.
Thanks in advance

Groups are always specified in inches. Aggs are always specified in "MOA" so they can be averaged for multi-yardage events.

Tuner?

Was he also wise enough to use one of those spectacular tuners that you have developed?

Matt, to my knowledge, Jim McGowin was not using any kind of tuner. His record group was shot with a rail gun, which I have not yet developed a tuner for.

You haven't heard much from me lately because I have been holed up in the shop installing tuners, while many others are still trying to figure out what's going on. :D

Gene,
I have a special favor to ask. Could you please call me at you convenience?

Thank you, Matt Guthrie.

Gentleman, Bill Calfee claims he was shooting in that era and boy could they pull the trigger. 27 years on before we have a new record.
