New to shooting.

HovisKM Thanks again and no I'm not offended :D I understand exactly what you are saying.. lol It's so frustrating not knowing enough about this sport hehe I'm trying to learn as much as I possibly can by posting and reading as many threads as I can.

I don't really want to limit my first rifle too much. I guess I want a bit of an "all-rounder" I won't be doing competative shooting until I understand EVERY aspect of how a gun works and can actually shoot :D As I said earlier I have only ever shot a .22 when I was about 13-14 so my experience in shooting is very little.

I know this probably hasn't answered your question any better =\ It's so hard to decide what I want.

Ben - You are on the right track

I would go with exacly what you have picked out. The scope is a very good one and you can use it for varmint hunting as well. I am not sure which reticle you are looking to get for the NF.

The Savage LRPV in 223 and in 1-8 twist will serve your needs very well. You did not mention if you reload or not ( and I think you do not yet ). Given the good 223 ammo available and the cost the 223 is the best option for you.

Another good thing about the 223 is the light recoil it has.

IMHO you have picked the perfect rifle/scope combination to start with. You can also do some varmint hunting if you desire with this setup.

Mike.

Hey thanks :D Unfortunately I can't get a 1 in 8" :( Only a 1 in 9"

As for varmint hunting, I'm going to buy a CZ 452 American rimfire for that :)

And Glen Newick has a book.
Try ebay. someone might have them.

Then like Adrian indicated. Find a local range. Take your safety glasses, hearing protection, notebook and pen to a range. Just go. You will find the nicest people. A lot of Aussies are on this site.
Another site to explore.
