New To Benchrest - Scope advice needed

Hello to all. First post here and am looking for some advice.

I am new to benchrest and am currently trying to put together a rig. I already have my old customized .177 Air Arms s400 action that is my old HFT gun and that will be going into an MPR stock in the next couple of days.

Now my attention turns to scopes. I have a choice of two scopes second hand within my price bracket. Its either a Weaver t36 or a Leupold vx3 6.5-20 EFR with a duplet ret.
Both are mint based on the pics i have seen with the weaver not having even been mounted on a gun. The Leupold is the more expensive of the 2 but is still within budget.

I have never looked through either scope and both will be mail order so will not get a chance to look through them first.

Any opinions welcomed guys as i want the right scope that will see my through as i learn and develope - dont want to be having to upgrade / change in 6 months time.

Many Thanks

Pete

Pete,
I would go with the Weaver. I can't speak for the other Teams at the World Championships last year, but I know 90%+ of the US shooters were using the T36.
My 2 cents worth,
Todd

I agree with Todd on the t36. It has at least 2 options for reticles and I use the one withthe 1/8 target dot. The lines on the Weaver are very fine and I at times have to "hunt" a bit just to pick the up and the dot really helps.
You can also occasionally pick up a used Leupold 36x on the classifieds for just a liitle more than a new Weaver.

IF you know you will only shoot 25 yards or 25 Meters, the Leupold would do it ok, but if you want to shoot longer sometimes, I suggest the 36X. Yes, the Weaver optics might be a little brighter, and the clicks "feel" smoother, but the Wavers are pretty decent, and I think the extra power of the Weaver wold give the nod.

I use both the ones you mention with acceptable results, but I also have and use a Leup fixed 36X, and I prefer it.

Thanks for the responses so far guys. I will check which ret the weaver has. Leupold comp second hand is out of budget / in the uk they command a lot if money and x36 versions are nit common.

You might look at a Sightron as well. I have had Weavers for years and like them. Last summer I bought a 36 Sightron from a friend and I find it to be Head and Shoulders better than a Weaver. Better optics and smaller reticle plus it focuses down small as well. A little bit more spendy but I think it worth the difference. Same warranty as the Weaver and probably made in the same factory in Japan.

I did look for a sightron but have not seen ine second hand in the UK. As said previously i also looke for a fixed mag leipold but these command a premium in the UK and was way out of budget. I have ordered the weaver now as it was as new condition and a very good price. From what i have read it will certainly be goid enough for me whike i learn benchrest.
