well id like to say hello to everyone first.

my name is Mick Godwin ''goddy''
im 25 an live in Queensland Australia.
by no means am i new to shooting or hunting ive done lots in my past.
i am new to bench-rest, i have decided to take this sport up in the last few months but im faced with a challenges from the get go, you see i haven't fired a rifle in 5 years or done much at all really. well ill get tom my point in 2003 i broke my neck leaving me in a wheelchair as a c5 quadriplegic, it was a freak accident Christmas day on a slip n slide mat ''kids toy, tarp soap water'' well full of bundy rum me an a mate had a chicken run where we went head first at each other on the slide and i ended up broken. STUPID you all think yes i say so too, but my life was no play it safe game i was a pro bull rider and worked on property's as a ringer, i hunted pigs with dogs an a knife did all sorts of wild fun things, so it took me by surprise getting taken out on a kids toy.

well 5 years on and i have found one thing so far thats up my ally and thats shooting. due to being on wheels and movement issues i figured bench is the go. i went out to our local range on saturday night an had a go with a Anschutz .22 @ 50 meters and found with a caldwell fire conntrole rest an my custom finger splint i was shooting great in no time. ill add picks.

i have bourght a ruger 77/22 an plan on makeing a go at this sport ill add details an picks of it too.

only things im stuck with is scope choice an if i should chage the stock down the track. but a scope is first off, im thinking somthing in the 10-40x50 range or 30x40 fixed but there is so many breeds out there an what one to go with.

Make: RUGERModel: 77/22
Calibre: 22LR

There are several Oz shooters that frequent here. I'm sure one will come on and help you with some recommendations. Availability in your market area and local rules will influence the choices. Best of luck and welcome to the sport.

RE Goody

I am also a Disabled Benchrest shooter and have been for the pass 5 or so years and have taken part in the Europeans Champinship and the World Championship last year, i have some great friends over there is Australia and would be happy to put you in contact with them if needs be. but you go for it mate us wheelies can give all the rest a run for their money and its a great sport and you make loads of friends as i have through this forum and around the world.

Andyd1179- You guys are not handicaped- You are challenged. You can do what ever you want to do.I like your attitude. Don't give up and never quit. If possible I hope to shoot with some of you some day. garrisone.

Goddy,
I see your already shooting the right type of target and if you want to keep up with everything going on down here go to www.oz-rba.com plenty of links to other places so most rimfire BR is covered.

You could play around with other scopes but you wouldn’t go wrong with a 36x weaver.

I have no idea if there is an aftermarket trigger for that rifle, 2 1/2lbs seems a lot, most of us are using a 2 ounce trigger.

Peter

thanks for your replies .

andyD it would be good to yarn up to you an see how you do things, as for wheels well they dont stop me doing much haha sometimes they help ;).

im up in Mackay north QLD.

so a 36x40 weaver would be ok. i have been a fan of tasco but it seams there are a lot of better scopes out now. plus i might have a price range of $400 au to spend.

For What Its Worth . . .

I use a WeaverT36 on my rifle and was surprised to see there is a few benchrest competitors that use 'em also.

Like any product, you can get a "beauty" or a lemon".

I'm happy with mine.

Keep up the good work (shooting) mate!

Hi Goddy

Hi Goddy, Firstly welcome to the OZ ranks of benchrest & as Peter says keep an eye out on our local sites such oz-rba.com & benchrestbulletin.net. I was at World Championships in Italy last year & had the pleasure of meeting & befriending Andy from the UK & could see first hand that being in a wheel chair is not a handicap in benchrest shooting.

Regarding the scope for that price you may get a 2nd hand Lynx which i believe is as good as a Weaver. Or if you want new look at the Nikko Sterling Night Eater Range 36 X (made in japan models) instead of the Tasco.

Regarding the rifle it looks nice but I am not sure it would have the precise accuracy required for RBA & SSAA (IRB) events here in Australia & I dont think the 10 round magazine is allowed in the rules either. It would be more suited to the hunting style benchrest disciplines that SSAA have here & there are many branches in Queensland where you live.

Hello Goody:

T10 to L2 here.

Hello to you too George, down there in Kentuckey.

Got crushed by a trailer load of assault boats after coming off an aborted river crossing with an Infantry squad. That was 57 years ago in Korea. While in a hospital in Soul I got fed by a couple of pretty Australian girls.

When I got home, I helped organize a shooting club and a smallbore league. Over the years I shot Centerfire Benchrest, Highpower, Metallic Silhouette, NRA Bullseye Pistol and Smallbore Prone/Position. (Liked prone, as I could shoot it like everyone else). Finally, 10 years ago, when I got old fat and lazy, I decided to try rimfire benchrest and organized a series of On-Line-Matches over on Rimfire Central.

We had about 18 guys from the Melbourne area shooting with us when we started the RFC Matches. Spotswood, Berwick, Milton, Queenscliff, Ringwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, Bacchus March, and Bannockurn. We sent them some USBR targets. When they ran out of targets, they stopped shooting with us. We have one down under guy shooting in the RFC matches with us now. His name is Matt Korhonen and he is in Melbourne.

We give a prize knife each month in the RFC matches by "Luck of the Draw". Matt has donated most of the knives. He gets them on eBay and has them sent to me for distribution. The cost of postage to Australia and back the US would be much more than the knives are worth.

Anyway: Welcome the wonderful world of rimfire benchrest. This is the sport for us.

its only my first rifle im sure ill upgrade when i have the money an down the track.
i also have a 5 shot mag an can get a single fire mag plug, ive looked at hunter class an class 1,2 but as my rifle is not factory standard hunter class is out by the looks an class 1 is a 6x scope witch is easy to get an also class 2 with open optics looks ok to.
im just getting started so i dont expect to win or compete just yet but in a year or so ill get into it full on an upgrade my squirt and by then i should have a better understanding of it all.

Today at the range .
score was 216 .. not bad for my first score card and 2nd shoot.
was a bit windy and once again it was at 50 meters with a .22cal

thats the rifle i am using for now. mine is still in the gun shop as i haven't got my licences yet. i know going from the anny to a ruger will be a big change but for now im able to use this one an in time use it to compete with.

Goddy,

Good luck with the benchrest shooting...I'm a C6-7 incomplete quad...hope your not hanging out with Agent Mulder...I am into Centrefire and Rimfire benchrest.

Steve

going from a 2013 to a ruger will break your heart..
are you able to load a round yourself ? it's realy hard for me but i manage pretty good.
hope that trigger on the 2013 is set so theres no need to (PULL) it that will help alot.
i see no wind flags in the pic's . that will help your score 75% if you can get some set out for ya.

havent tryed to load yet as i have no hand function but i can work the bolt.

yes there will be a huge change in the two but ill still have use of the 2013 so the 77/22 will be my hunter class/play toy until i can fund a anschutz of my own.

the trigger is very light to the point where some times i fire when im not ready haha i either get a got shot or one that's awol, but its just the 2nd time I've used the rifle an im getting better with it.

wind flags wernt really a need the other day as i was just playing with finding witch way of setting myself up to shoot ( position of chair ect ) sending a set down range is just added extra for me at this point. when i find my correct position that works for me ill then start to learn all the fine points of benchrest shooting.

Goddy,

agent mulder haha

c6-7 inc your lucky as in a quad range anyway ;) triceps an hand function would be bliss.

shootin

goody

fine shooting indeed can you come over and give me some lessons your targets look great.

as for a scope if you check up on the winners of the major shoots they are all using mostly weaver t36s, some sightrons and a few others so there must be something to this weaver thing.

gene davis even makes an adaptor to boost it even higher and it works. you are a very good shooter.

good shootin
