New target Paper

Randy..silicon is being used in the paper making process...school notebook paper recieves a small amount of silicon to make it slick...I worked in the printing industry in the 70s and was told silicon was the prime ingredient for making paper slicker to reduce the paper powder that was ever present in the printing business..and starch was used for the bonding agent...

My only post here

I am watching this thread with great interest - post #16 is very interesting.

Measurement Idiosyncrasies

Scott Dittman...
Bob Hart and I just measured 20 targets on Wednesday night that had been submitted to the IBS for record considerations. All 20 were 600-yard targets...and all exhibited a characteristic that we had noticed last year in December while measuring long range targets - that is, when one of the two widest shots is in the blue and one is in the white, it ALWAYS seems easier to start on the one in the blue and move to the one in the white. Why?...because even though the blue is better than the black used on the 100 and 200 yard targets, white is still BY FAR the easiest color to CLEARLY outline the radius of the bullet with the reticle, and it seems easier to center the tougher radius to see BEFORE you push the punch down and start spreading those jaws...
Another thing that we have noticed is this...one needs to make certain that when lining up on the first hole, that he/she has the reticle perfectly in line with the hole that you're moving to. You can alter measurements quite a bit if you do not...
Finally...a GREAT observation on your part about the black edge of the bullet holes being washed away on wet targets! I would add that unfortunately we're finding that the material of the fibers that make up much of the newer target material of today is allowing for a very muted edge when wet...and is not cutting cleanly allowing for a radius to be distinct...
Dave Tooley...
Although you haven't posted on this thread, I know you're watching :) ...thanks a bunch for the sample targets you sent my way. When I get the paper from Randy, we're going to do some serious testing...and try to make things better for all of our clubs working with IBS targets next year...

The target frames---

At the Fayette range were designed so that the targets were protected with an overhang and when we held matches in inclimented weather, the targets were easy to score. I've never seen this done in any of the other matches. Too bad they are no longer in use
