New Falcon Rimfire BR action

Phil!!!! You ain't right, or are ya? I was hoping you'd make it up to shoot last weekend. You could have taken a load of the chiggers back to GA and they would have died from the heat. 99 degrees just wasn't hot enough to kill 'em this past Saturday.
 
Yep almost nothing worst than chigger bites. The thing I try to avoid is walking in any tall grass/weeds especially if it's nice and green. Whenever I go somewhere I think there's a chance of them I spray my shoes, and half way up my legs/pants with deep woods off. So far so good.

I put a barrel on the action in the pictures this afternoon. Next thing is to get it in a stock. I have to decide on whether to work at that tomorrow, or work on the ac fan on my SUV. It's been in the high 90's, so I'm leaning toward fixing the A/C fan
 
Left/left? Gentlemen I don't know at this early stage, but I assume it's a possibility if there is enough demand. Right now the effort is to get the prototype in a stock and shooting, and make sure all works as designed. I don't have any doubts that it will work fine, but the proof is in the performance.
I'm sure Leonard appreciates all the interest that has been shown, and they're as anxious as everyone else to move ahead with the production once everything is as it should be. I want to thoroughly test the prototype in match conditions. The time to get it "just right" is from the start. We discussed drop in loading today, and I tested a few different feed ramp designs. One of the ramps I put in would feed EPS bullets silky smooth into a .2250 chamber that I had not yet polished. It fed bullets like a 1907 Anschutz. Drop in loading is nice.

I spent the afternoon in the shop with Leonard Baity and the Falcon rimfire action, getting the feed ramp design just right. The good news is , it works very well just laying a round in and closing the bolt.
We also worked setting up the ignition with a mock up barrel. Bolt lift to cock the action was around 5.5 lbs lift. All the numbers came up fine and this action will produce "repeatable strong ignition". It's also adjustable for spring tension and firing pin protrusion.
He has a six oclock firing pin bolt already made up that I plan on testing as soon as I get this prototype that I've barreled and stocked going. It's barreled and the bedding is drying, but I'll still have to finish the stock. I can't wait to shoot it, but want to get it right first.

So far this is where it's at:

Guard screws--.250"X 28TPI

6 o'clock or 12 oclock firing pin option
drop in loading

Set up for Remington pattern trigger-uses trigger hanger

Action drilled and tapped to use two Remington front bases.

Two screws forward of the trigger so you can float the tang- tang screw hole is there for those who want one screw in the rear, and one in front, and you can use a plug screw in the tang. You could probably order it without the tang screw hole.

If they're regular chiggers, you can sprinkle on.................

151 Bacardi on the skivvies, and inside the thighs. If they're the hardshell kind, only Everclear and Horseradish will work. Keeps your elapsed times down, too! :eek: :D :cool:

The down side to the new actions being introduced or just talked about, are they are not ambidextrous. Lefties and righties can't share at a match.

Not complaining when something great comes along. Just sad, that I won't be able to partispate for a while. LH testers are never needed.

Jack- No heat treatment is done after the action is machined. As for the specific hardness I can't answer that, but it is 416 stainless. I'm going over the to shop tomorrow and I'll find out then. I'll try and post a list of specs once things are finalized.

Cliff--Yeah I got chiggers as well, first time since I was a kid and that was a long time ago.
I put some Neosporin on mine and it seemed to help, but the itch is still there. I'll ask Dr. Gambill what he would prescribe. My guess would be to just put some Jack Daniels on them until I can figure out a cure. I guess you guys are all upset at me for getting the chiggers. Do you reckon I'll get lynched or tarred and feathered when I come back to Tennessee? I apologize for the chiggers, I thought they were extinct until the past weekend!!!

Re: Chiggers,,,, sulphur powder, (sometimes called "flowers of sulphur") sprinkled around your ankles waist line cuffs ect will repel them. It won't repel anything else though, so if other critters will be trying to bite you, a DEET containing preparation would be better. One excellent treatment for the itching is Anbesol toothache drops, or anything else with a good amount of benzocaine or lidocaine will stop the itch of irritated skin (Americaine spray for sunburn works ok too) . fingernail polish is an old wives tail type remedy that don't do anything. It is a common misconception that the chiggers have burrowed into your skin and the polish will smother them. chiggers are long gone by the time you itch. they require a blood meal for reproduction just like mosquitoes. They have an anticoagulant spit that is one of the most antigenic substances known to man,,, ie nearly everyone will itch when bitten by them. (My credentials, are i'm a retired pharmacist who grew up squirrel hunting, & squirrel season opened during while chiggers are still very active. my dad taught me the sulfur trick back in the 60's. I'm sure he learned it from his or someone during his youth in the 40's.. Also i had a very informative parasitology class while attending the University of Tn. Knoxville. for a chigger story, My brother was married on opening day of squirrel season back in the early 80's in Columbia, Tn. All of us groomsmen refused to let his wedding disrupt our opening day tradition. We all sprayed each other down with deep woods off. Evidently whomever sprayed me missed a few inches on my lower back right in the middle at my belt line. The day after the wedding, i had to have had several hundred chigger bites on my butt cheeks, making Craigs wedding day one to remember ;>(. I think we were hunting in Perry county, which my bet is that its the chigger capital of the world.Bout the only time we ever get chiggers around here is squirrel hunting or blackberry picking. The first frost ends them for the season. What makes one think they are extinct is as we get older, we are less frequently in the chigger haunts.. I know i don't hunt like i did 30 yrs ago, i bet most of us older fellas don't... Death to chiggers!!!

Now, how is the action doing?

We used to use the old sulfur trick back in the early 70's for mosquitoes when we fished at the coast. No mosquitoe in his right mind would come near you on the second or third day. Matter of fact, no human would either.

I shot the rifle that I just put together about 10 minutes before I left on Friday for Kettlefoot. I fired the first bullets down range sighting it in about 5:00 Friday afternoon. It shoots very well. I shot a 249-16X target and took the bolt apart 4 times during the target. I ws playing with firing pin spring tension. I had packed a little tool box with some firing pin stock, some different weight firing springs, tools, ect., and took it along. Only problem was I forgot to pack my Dremel tool to cut the hardened firing pin stock made from high speed steel.
I wasn't satisfied with the way I had the ignition set up, but the rifle is probably the most dead accurate rifles I've ever had, so that's good.
I shot the rifle on 4 targets during the VA State meters and Mid Atlantic Regionals meters. All the misses were the fault of the shooter, not the rifle. My last target was a 245-14X but I shot into a gust and shot a -3 out at 3 oclock on the target.
My bad sporter scores hurt my overall performance. In the VA State out of 44 places I finished 11th. I shot a pair of 244's with the sporter, that cost me a lot of places. I checked it after the first match and found the bedding had gone bad. I could loosen the front screw and the receiver would rise about 60/1000ths:)
The prototype Falcon action works very well, and the production models will be even better. The feed ramp works very well. The rifle shoots as well or better than the one I shot the 750-53X with back in May. Not bad for a rifle not broken in yet. I was using an old Leupold 24X scope that I had stashed in the closet on it.

I can attest to Leonard Baity's work. Leonard has done all my 1000 yard barrels for 5 years and built my last complete gun. It is the 6BR on the short range score page of Leonards website. My HG has finished 2nd for score at the IBS nationals and 5th in score at the Penna World Open in successive years. That is the last match I shot, but will be back shooting more soon. He is currently bedding a 338 Lapua in a Manners T5A for me and doing some barrels for my varmint gun...Leonard's stuff works!

As for the actions, I was talking with him today about the 338 when we got on to the rimfires. He did say that for this action he will make a Left Bolt with sufficient confirmed orders to offset the tooling/fixture costs. I do not know how many that is but if you want a Left Bolt rimfire, that group will need to place orders and make deposits. Right or Left port does not matter for either bolt configuration. The same is true for the centerfire actions. I will be the first to step up and place an order for a LH bolt centerfire action for my son who is a southpaw.
