I have a Rem 700 action that I am wondering if I can have a bolt made, its a 30-06 right now, I would like to have a bolt made thats a mag boltface. Is it a good or bad thought? what are the +'s and the -'s Thank you for your time. Ron Tilley

PT&G Bolts are readily available..

Dan Armstrong in Fairbanks AK, has one day turn around service. Look for Dans40x, at his accutig web sight.

It won't work well as a 30-06 afterwards... If you plan on making a Magnum you should see if they will feed out of the magazine first... that would be another expense if they don't. Often is is cheaper to trade/sell your -06 for a Magnum action or the other way around. I suggest you don't have your bolt altered without installing the original Remington style extractor.

Dave Kiff in Oregon makes bolts for the 700.

thank you guys, I have a follower glued in so feeding is not a problem, its already in a stock, I just thought about making it into a magnum if possible, I did not know if the feed port was the same size as a magnum or if I needed to look at anything else. Ron Tilley

Ron, I think you'll forever fight with a clicky sticky bolt if you use the 700 action for a magnum. The tenon is too small IMO.

BTW a friend of mine just bought the new Savage 300WSM with the larger tenon, it shows some real promise.

You shouldn't have any problems with a sticky bolt in a 700 with a standard head sized magnum case. I wouldn't suggest using one for a .338 Lapua or any of the other extra large magnums as the barrel thread is too small in diameter for them, but for a 7 Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag, STW or any of the cartridges in that size range, you won't have a problem. I'd probably also steer clear of the Ultramag cartridges as they have the same base diameter of the extra large magnums with a rebated rim and the same problems that the super magnums have in 1 1/16" diameter barrel tenons. Dan Lilja's article on large magnums in 700's will explain this.

I have a 30-06 that I converted to a magnum for 1000 yard BR. I've never had a problem with feeding or ejection. After all, what we old guys used to call the "short magnums" were 2.5 " case length - the same as the '06. Even the 2.6" 300 WM will work fine.

I converted mine myself by opening the bolt face, installing a SAKO extractor, bushing the bolt body, and adding a custom knob. Of course, that was back in the days before Dave Kiff made replacement bolts. If I had to do it over I would probably get a new fitted bolt from Dave, although it will add to the cost of the rifle.

As I recall, Karl H. won a Nationals and was known to kick some serious butt using a 40X chambered for the 300 Win Mag and he never did anything to the bolt or ejection port as far as I know.

while this may a bit of topic, i took a short action Savage and converted it to a 7 RSAUM. i purchased another mag well and carefully bent it to the proper shape and angle for the mag cartridge. feeds fine. also, it is on the older 1.050 diameter action, and i hung a 32 inch barrel off of it.

I reworked the 308 bolt on a Rem 700 SA to be a magnum, using the standard Rem 700 mag extractor. Chambered up a 300 WSM and never had any problems at all when shooting it.

Mike,

The case diameter of the "regular magnums" is about .512, ahead of the belt. The Ultra Mags and Jeffrey brass that I've used had a case diameter of about .540-.545 at the base. The 416 Rigby/Lapua mag case is about .582 or so, I think but don't have one in front of me to check. The WSM and other "short mags" are in the .540 area, also, I think.
I agree that the 700 is not a good choice for the Rigby/Lapua cases but have read of a number of M70 Winchesters in those calibers. Isn't the M70 tenon smaller in diameter than the M700 Remington?

I glad my rifles can't read. I've got a .300 Ultra, a .338 Ultra and a .270WSM all built on Remington actions. None of em have issues with "clicking" bolts. Guess what they don't know won't hurt em.;)

There shouldn't be a problem using the Ultramag or WSM's on Remington actions as long as they aren't overloaded. I've heard of rifle(s) being blown up with Ultramag cartridges. I've never seen one and it's just been hearsay. I'm sure that if this happened it was caused by the more powder mentality of some of the guys who want as much speed as they can get who keep adding more powder until something has to give. Safe loads with any of the cartridges are never the problem. Problems come from overloads and mistakes. Any problems that I've ever had with clicking bolts was in PPC's where the brass was shot hard and reloaded too long. I don't use hunting rifle brass long enough to have problems with wearing out the brass and developing clicking problems.

I have a Winchester 70 action in the shop that I bought a few years ago to build a 7 WSM. It's one of the controlled round push feed actions built for the WSM. I don't remember what the thread diameter was on it, but it's a 1 1/16"-16 now. It's kind of like the painters house in that one of these days I'll finish the rifle. It keeps being overlooked to finish paying rifles.

I have never seen a blown up unaltered 700 action... anyone got any pictures and details?

Sorry to bring this up again, but a few questions asked by the girl at PT&G made me come back for more information. I am purchasing a oversized bolt from PT&G it will be .703 with a magnum b-f. The action will be reamed out to .705, the questions that I have were 1). I was asked what size firing pin size that I want? 2). if I want a lightened steel firing pin? can someone help me out with these questions? thanks, Ron Tilley

Always ready to help you get answers for a girls questions ;)

#1- .062

#2- no, IMO you want to keep the firing pin wt and reduce the spring tension instead.

BTW, doncha' just luvvit when "The Receptionist" ends up being worth talking to?? I had the same experience with PacNor...... I called and got "the receptionist" and asked "who do I talk to about oversized blanks and blah blah blah....."

And she proceeded to load me with info :D:D It wasn't until we got into the radius of the Palma taper that she hung up, and then she got right back to me with the correct information not with something else.

And we've got a parts girl behind the counter in our local Schucks Auto Supply that will give the crustiest old manager a run for his money. She's found me stuff over the phone that others including the DEALER can't figger.

LOVE IT!!!
