Here's a pic of the stock mounted in the mill. Shown with a mockup Smith Titanium tube, Dan Brown regulator design fitted to my receiver.

I agree with both Todd and Brad, and love the fact you are leaving the pistol grip large enough to have plenty of finger/hand grip room - along with being vertical! Will the stock alone be available?

I see nothing new, whats the big deal? did i miss something ? H.B.

Mebby availability will make it a big deal? Where can a fellow buy one like it for one of the goofy Pellet Rifle actions ?

A big difference on this stock versus just about any other stock you would buy for an air rifle is, the wood was tooled up in a mill and EVERY plane is flat, parallel and perpendicular to each plane. Yes, to some overkill, but not for my components. The basis of the stock is about as perfect as it can be. Anyone using one of these stocks is assured of the very best performance. There is another secret I put into my stock, but I rather not divulge the information here. I am contemplating making all the stocks myself since I am not confident in anyone that I talked to so far that would follow my specs that I require on this stock. If anyone knows someone that can duplicate precisely, let me know.

Pete, understand you concern. Just give me a minute here. In the past, the components I made for a small group of people were for the most part a hobby for me. I have had many air rifles; I looked at what was available and to be honest, I was a bit disappointed at the quality of most rifles I have seen as well as the ugly looks of some that I could not stomach to own. As many of my friends know, this all started with my custom Airwolf many years ago. I'm not gonna bag another airgun maker, but I wanted a rifle with the quality I would expect a $3000+ rifle should have. So many guys go out and buy a $2000+ rifle and spend another $1000+ on it to improve it and it's still sub standard in my opinion. The is not one of those simple rifles made from basic components. The components I'm making have been evolving and making large quantities of parts, just has not been part of the plan in the past. Normally I make five receivers at a time, just a couple times a year. My action quality is made similar to what you would see in a custom centerfire benchrest rig. For example, In my action, there are 7 components that are heat treated D2 tool steel. Very expensive material, a B**** to machine and time consuming to make. But the end result is a high quality component, made to last and perform at the highest level expected.

Availability will no longer be an issue. I am making a larger quantity of components so that I don't get behind the "eight ball" as they say. It has been a long process, but I just won't compromise the quality or performance of my components. In the next couple weeks, I'll have some more info on the stock as well as complete actions.

Thanks, Gordon

Gordon, thank you for realizing that there is a right and wrong way to do things. The majority of yellow forum shooters have no idea what you are even talking about. Knowledgable benchrest shooters know, or should know, there is a definate relationship between parts each complimenting the other for the whole system to work. Your contributations to this sport are most valuable in both design and function. This sport has been in the dark ages for years with no progress and outside the box thinking. People like you are changing the very face of the sport. We that admire meticulous work, design and function thank you...........Please press on.

Gordon, My reply

regarding the "Goofy Actions of Air Guns is their having the trigger and trigger guard as part of the action body. With most other rifle actions, the trigger assembly hangs from the action. Rifle stocks have evolved to accomodate that situation. That style action came to be "Conventional" which is what generated my comment.

I don't have a problem with the trigger and trigger guard being part of the action but obviously it requires a different design of stock, which you are creating. Good on you for it. I am hoping you will mass produce enough stocks so that some of the other make rifles out there can be fitted in them.

We are in exciting times now with new things coming along. You are making an enormous contribution to the Sport with what you are doing. There will be more like you come along, I predict, as well as more Smiths who will be building rifles for us. Exciting times, indeed. I hope you can keep up your great work for a very long time.

Thank You,

Pete

I'd like to put my 2 cents worth in on Gordon's work. I've had the pleasure first of shooting an action/trigger that he was kind enough to lend to Rick Ingraham for the HV class at the World Championship, and now I'm the proud owner of an updated version. I don't have much experience shooting air rifles but am very familiar with high end custom BR .22 rimfire rifles. I can honestly say that I've never shot anything that functions as smoothly as the Dawson I own now. The bolt action is unbelievable easy to cycle and the trigger can be adjusted so low that it's practically telepathic. I have another one on the way to build an Open/UL class gun and am thinking about buying a third to build an LV class gun on to complete the set(please don't tell my wife!). I'm very interested in that stock, too!
