Need help selecting a good Bench/ F CLass type gun

I live in ND and want a gun for shooting off the bench (99% of its use) and for a local league that I believe is similar to F class (we only have a 600 Yard berm but a 1000 yard one is in the works).

There are no real matches in this area so a "Class defined gun" isn't important as I will likely not be traveling for competition.
I can spend about $1500 for the rifle.
I am a moderately skilled shooter but my expertise is primarily in 1000 yard hunter class shooting (off the ground) with a 50 BMG and unknown range "stump shooting" with 223 rifles in the badlands with friends.

I have considered a used 40X in 308 or a Cooper but the Remingtons are hard to come by and the Cooper reviews and style seem better suited to hunting.

I have a Remington 700 Heavy barrel 308 that I thought would be a good basis for a custom gun but there are no good smiths in the area and it seems like a good Mcmillain stock plus barrel and smithing is far more expensive than a good rifles base price?

If you could chime in your recommendations I would appreciate it!

Big Tex,
Just a suggestion but if it was me I would drop down a few posts and look at "New Shop" by Neiska Chad and get in touch with him. I think he would able to help you out. Besides, ya'll are both in the Dakotas, so you can't be far apart. :) It would probably be worth a trip as I think he knows what he is doing when it comes to firearms.
Best,

"Where are we going and why am I in this basket?"

Big Tex,

I have a hunch we may be neighbors and may be shooting the same league this coming yr.. PM/Email sent to ya.

I would also contact Stan Ware of SGR rifles in western Minnesota, Great guy and great gunsmith, and he would is more than capable of the work your rifle would require.

FBecigneul,

Gotta ask about West Dak and East Dak, what kind of map are you looking at?

LOL!!

Try to contact Al Nyhus or Steve Grosvenor as well, Al is in West Dak and Steve is in East Dak. They both haunt these pages and may be able to shoot along with you if they don't already. Steve is in on the building of a range near Beresford. As Paul said, if it's a "local" number one gunsmith you want, call Stan Ware of SGR Gunsmiths.

I too am curious about your West Dak-East Dak reference FB. Especilly since Sioux Falls and Beresford are less than 60 miles seperation N-S and almost on the same meridian E-W. And Sioux falls is definitely East River ( another SoDak term, FB). ;>)

FB,

I will give you that as that is pretty much the truth & a statement I will agree with. State boundries be danged. Not unlike the Yoopers and the Trolls.

And not every one knows that... I have actually been asked if we still have a lot of horses running around. And NO! The movie was shot in the Brainerd MN area!!!

Alas, all the beauty starts in West Dak and I am stuck in the buttcrack.....

I apologize for insinuating you may be geographically challenged!!! Lol!

I have to agree with Jackie for new and bang for the buck. I have seen some upper end savages shoot some amazing groups out of the box. Seems like it takes at least 2500 to build a decent custom rifle.
