Neck Clearance?

DSM

Chuck
I shoot a .264" necked Dasher and I've been shooting with .001" neck clearance(.263" loaded).

Let say I turn another .001" off my neck to obtain .002" clearance(.262" loaded), will this lower any type of pressure?

I haven't run into pressure, just simply wondering if more clearance will alleviate pressure or what are the pro/cons with more/less clearance.

pressure

Yes if pressure is a problem and your neck is to tight increasing neck clearance will help to bring pressure down . Of coarse there are a great number of contributing factors to a pressure problem. But neck clearance is always a good place to start looking . A little more clearance to a degree could help if indeed that is the problem . As far as pro/cons I build all my comp. guns with no turn chambers .I put .003 thous. clearance in the neck and shoot out to 600yds.quite well . It does not seem to shortened case life or cause inaccuracy. www.therifler.com

In a recent thread, the general consensus among Competitive Benchrest Shooters was a tad more clearance is better than a tad too little.

Proper bullet release is extremely important in solving the "accuracy equation". There is always that nagging fear that if the neck clearance is a little too tight, a pressure spike might occur, resulting in a errant shot. Since .002 seems to shoot just as well as .001, why not go with the .002 and remove the doubt.

I have talked to several top shooters who are using .0025, with no ill affects.

My 6BR has a .269" neck and the loaded rounds are .268" at the neck. When I built my Dasher I chambered it with a no turn neck reamer. The chamber neck is .272" but I still skim cut the necks on my brass. The loaded Dasher ammo is .268" at the neck and it shoots very, very well. I cut the Dasher necks to .268" so I could use the bushing from my BR Die ;)

.002" total clearance isn’t going to hurt you at all.
