Hi, looking for a starting load for the Hornady 87 gr. V Max bul. and N 135 pwdr. Upon checking some charts, I was wondering if Im safe starting out with around 28.0 gr. of n135. Planning on useing cci br4 primers, to start out with, and Lapua brass. Shooting a Shilen match brl., 26". I tried the Varget powder the first time around, but did not work out as well as I thought it should be. Got that from the 6br site. H4895 will follow. Twist is 1 in 8. Thank you.

At 28.0 grains, I think you are on the low side, however it is a start.

IMHO, N135 is a little bit too fast for this combo.
You should have better results with N140 and even N150.

For bullets weighting 88 (Berger) to 105 (Berger VLD), I had the best results with N150.
Yes your load is on the low side. You should find a good window starting at 29.0 gr of N150 and working up that load by 0.3gr increment.

The Pigman 2, Your statement about N135 might be too fast for this combo confuses me a bit. According to the 6BR sight, they suggest for bullets between 70-90 grs. that N135 and H4895 are excellent choices. What am I missing here. Thanks for your comments. The load that I had posted was a feeling for where I could start, and then work up from there. But I see where others think that 28.0 is on the low side also. So, I will rethink my starting load and continue to seek out more info.

It has been said

that N 135 has been slowed down over the past few years. This has been confirmed by some folks I know who use or have used it.

N-135 and 80gn Bergers was one of the most accurate loads in a 6BR 8 twist.
Doubt I still have the data tho. I don't meticulousy save data like everyone else. If I want to revisit that load I'd jam the Bergs .010 and shoot an Audette ladder. Have fresh data in a few minutes.

I did not want to get you confused in anyway.
I just related my humble experience with Vihtavuory powders and as I said bullets between 88 and 105 gr.

Good enough for 3rd, 2nd and then 1rst place in our 300 meters prone Nationals.

Good shooting.

The Pigman 2, Maybe you read my first post a little fast. I mentioned that I was looking for a starting load for the 87 gr. VMax bul. I agree with you on the heavier weight bullets and the use of N140 and N150. And by the way, congradulations on the good shooting. What bullet did you use at 300 meters. I have been working with the 80gr. Berger bul and N135 last year when the season ended, so this year I will continue to see if I can better my load to shrink my groups even more. I only worked with that combo just 4 times before the weather here got too nasty out. At 300 yds. my best 5 shot group was 1 & 5/16". That was with 30.3 grs. of N135 and Fed. 205 primers set at .010 into the lands. Can't wait to get back on working with that load. Keep up the good shooting.

I shot varget with the 6BR with the 87gr V-Max with good results.

The N135 I've been shooting was bought quite some time ago, but I'm using it behind 65 gr Hornady V-Max's in a 6 BR. It would seem that N140 or Reloder 15 would be better powders for the 87 gr and heavier bullets.

I probably will be trying N140 as well as many others before it's all said and done with. Like everyone else, trial and error. Thanks.

Hmmmm....

that N 135 has been slowed down over the past few years. This has been confirmed by some folks I know who use or have used it.

This has not been my experience. Been using N135 @ 42.8gr behind a 136 BIB for Hunter score for the past five years and have noticed no difference.

30 HBR, which is a 30/47 with a sharper shoulder. I use 300 Savage brass to make it.

Virg,
What we are talking about here is a 6BR not a 30BR or 30Whatever. Totally different animal as I am sure you know.

I don't shoot my 6BR anymore but when I did I found Varget to be the best powder with 80 grain Bergers. Barrel has a 1 in 12 twist and 80's are about the longest it will stabilize, but that was the best combo it seemed to like. Don't remember the load. Seems like, (caution), it was in the 31+ range.
