As many of you know, I have some of my 30-30 barrels chambered in a .150" short 30-30. This cartridge equals the 30BR in capacity and velocity. Forget about the difference in the shape of the case. I have proven many times that this cartridge duplicates the 30BR in grain for grain velocity comparisons. With that said, keep one thing in mind. My bullet dies are 9 ogive, so they seat about .075" further out than a 7 ogive. Because of this, I have to shoot about 34.5 grains of H4198 to attain the same velocity (3020 -3040 fps) as would normally be seen with around 33.8-34gr. of H4198 using a 7 ogive bullet. The bullet weight also makes a little bit of difference. The testing below is for 110gr. and 118gr. bullets, but both are out of the same 9 ogive die.
By weight, the charges of N120 approach that of H4198. However, the N120 is more dense. The 33.5gr load of N120 was about .25" down the case neck, and this was with no drop tube. I just poured it from the pan into a funnel fairly fast. I did not try to push high velocities. I'm sure 100 plus fps increase is very doable. This powder is similar in size to the LT powders.
Turner 110gr. 9 ogive .010" into lands 22.5" barrel
31.0gr. - 2910 fps
32.0gr. - 2976 fps
33.0gr. - 3052 fps
Turner 118gr. 9 ogive .010" into lands
32.0gr. - 2923 fps
33.0gr. - 2990 fps
33.5gr. - 3028 fps
reduce these loads by about .5 grains for a 7 ogive bullet to attain similar velocities.
