rifle
scope
ammo

what else do i need?

i would assume i need a rest besides my bipod. also do i need a spotting scope or rear bag

Rear bag
Clip Board
Pens and Plot Sheets
Shooting Mat
You might be able to borrow a spotting scope, stand and chair from the competitor your squaded with... Maybe
Timer
FOOD&WATER ;)
Shooting Glasses
Simple tools (screw driver, allen wrenches...)

Are you shooting F/Open or F/TR?

Ditto on most of the things AJ mentioned... clipboard and pen for when its your turn to keep score, if nothing else. Plot sheets are a good idea, especially for beginners (I still use them) but if its your first time out you may want to avoid the distraction. Shooting mat or a cheap camping mattress - not strictly necessary if the range you're going to has a grass firing line (and you don't mind getting a little damp), definitely appropriate if they have gravel or paved firing lines - less fun to lay on, etc.

If the match is at one distance, try to have basic come-ups for that distance. If thats not possible (i.e. you don't have that distance available at your home range) have a good solid zero at the max distance you do have acess to... and a half-decent estimate of MV and print out a come-up sheet. If the match is at multiple distances (say 800, 900, 1000) *write down* your come-ups somewhere you won't lose them - like inside the lid of your ammo box ;) DAMHIKT

One note on the food/water thing... most stateside matches don't have anything like a civilized lunch break, so think munchies, sandwiches... stuff you can eat with one hand while scoring or pulling targets with the other, or while walking during pit changes.

Bring a cleaning rod... just in case you have a squib, or a broken extractor, etc.

If shooting F/Open, I'd say fabricate a couple wood 'plates' from 1x stock or 3/4 ply about the size of the footprint of your rear bag. You may need them to get things lined up if the firing line is unlevel or the targets are above or below the firing line. Way easier to slip a plate under the bag for 'coarse' adjustment than spend forever mucking about with the front rest.

And don't forget a small cart of some kind to put it all in so you don't have to carry it all in your hands :D

Hearing protection
F Open - front rest or bipod
F/TR - front bipod
Rear bag
Empty chamber indicator
Wide brim boonie hat
Some sort of mat, an old throw rug or campers mat will work.

A decent spotting scope is nice, but if you have enough scope it's not a requirement.

A cart is nice, but a decent large enough shoulder strap carry bag will serve for your first time out. If you decide to rig up a cart, fix it up so it can't roll off on its own down a hill or some such disaster.

A few basic tools just in case

Your cleaning kit set up for field use just in case

Definitely any sort notebook to record range conditions and come-ups. When you hit the X ring you want to record the exact scope setting for elevation. A range book would be the best choice of course. I designed pages in Excel spreadsheet to suit what I want and printed them on heavy stock.

Food, water, a roll of butt wipe (just in case and cleaning patches really aren't a suitable substitute).

A digital camera to help recall what the more experienced guys are using/doing, and just to record your first time out.

glasses

Are shooting glasses mandatory at f-class shoots?

Yes Jim, that's Rule 3.19 as copied and pasted:

3.19 Eye Protection* - All competitors and other personnel in the immediate vicinity of the range complex are
urged to wear eye protection devices.
3.20 Ear Protection* - All competitors and other personnel in the immediate vicinity of the range complex are
urged to wear hearing protection devices of either the passive or electronic type. Standard medically prescribed
hearing aids may be used.
*Match sponsors (and/or ranges) may require eye and ear protection.

Are you going to be shooting this year? Vince and I just finished the NRA Application for Peru and emailed it, we are adding 5 more Target Frames to make it 35. I'll be sending out an update to all email address I have in the next couple of weeks.

Hope to see ya,
Mike

F-class peru

Vince and mike, keep up the good work, 35 target frames, wow,tom

Mike:
Yes I do plan to shoot. The neck is finally coming around. I'm shooting position smalbore now without any problem. I haven't tried shooting any centerfire since last June as it hurt too much. I'm pretty confident that by Spring I'll be good to go with the centerfire.
