Model 7 Remington

I want to know if anyone else has had the same results with their model 7's. Mine is a 350 Rem. Mag. If so I maybe in the market for more 7's.
I have been shooting mine at 100 yds and it has consistenly been shooting under 1/2" groups. One group used 2 rounds 200 gr Hornady with 53 grains
H-322 and the other load was 2 shots 225 Sierra with 56 gr Varget into the same group measuring .360" I have since shot a few 3 shot groups that measured .375" This is with a completely factory rifle with nothing done to it except put a 2x7 Leupold VX11.

Bought one years ago in .223 for a walk-around varmint rifle. Shot 3/4 inch groups with 45 bergers over N-133. It shot a few (and far between) 3 shot groups worthy of bragging about, but nothing really consistent. It's recently been rebarrelled to a short 20 PPC with a mag weight barrel - shoots a little better now.

I have another Mod 7 in 7mm-08 (stainless/synthetic). Doesn't really shoot great groups in the normal sense of the word, but I carried the same target all year during deer season year before last. Everytime I went to the hunting club, I'd stop by the range, set up the target at 100 yds and put one more in it from a cold barrel - morning, evening, cold, warm.... At the end of the season, I had 11 shots in just under 2 inches using the same box of (yes you're reading this right) factory Remington CoreLokt 140 grainers... Plenty accurate for deer down here in pine plantation country. I've got a Lee collet die and a wilson seater for 7-08 but I've never fooled with it - it might shoot better with a little tuning, but its really fine for what it's supposed to do.

Butch

Butch, I shoot Benchrest both group and score, and have several custom hunting rifles that shoot very well, but what amazed me was how well this factory rifle shoots and was wondering if it is a fluke or the norm for the Model 7 or maybe the caliber. I would post pictures but can't seem to figure it out and who would really believe since it wasn't in competition. Curtis

Curt, I have a Model 7 purchased in 1984 I believe that is the original KS stock and a 18 1/2" barrel chambered for the 7-08. That rifle really shoots if I play with the tune. I now shoot the 120 grain Triple Shock and 3 shots groups of 3/4moa are common. The 160 grain Sierra is really consistent also with most 3 shot groups 3/4 moa or less at 100 yards. I just returned from an antelope hunt and the triple shocks did an awesome job. I have worn the paint off of that stock from years of use and it still shoots great after countless rounds. Tom

I have two Model 7's. One in 7mm-08 and the other in 7mm Remington Short Mag. The 7mm-08 will shoot into 5/8" cold bore all day long, as long as I shoot Hornady Light Mag. 139gr BTSP. If I use Remington or Federal ammo the groups open up to 1".
As for the 7mm Short Mag., The best I can massage out of it with Remington 140gr Premier or the 150gr Premier, cold bore is 11/2". I suspect handloads would improve this.
As far as the 7mm-08 goes, 5/8" groups with factory ammo and a bone stock "pencile barrel" aint too bad!
Keeping in mind that 7mm-08 is 10yrs old, I would be reluctant to say the new Model 7's would do so well.
Seems Big Green is, to say the least, lacking in the accuracy department now days.

You got my interest...

So I revived this post.

I put a little acra-glass behind the recoil lug of my 7mm-08 SS model 7, borrowed some IMR 4895 from my dad, prepped some new brass and reloaded a few 140 Nos Ballistic Tips.

I got enough powder in the case to get an average 2807 fps over the chrony from the short Mod 7 barrel. Semi flat primers, no bolt sticks. Loaded at appoximately 2.815 OAL so they fit in the magazine.

Zeroed at 235 yards I've got a 3 inch MPBR to 275 yards. I've shot 3 -3 shot groups at 275 yards on 3 different days. The average of the three is 2.07. The point of impact is indeed 3 inches low...

I have no problem with this accuracy in a hunting rifle... and it's still got around 1600 ft-lb of wallop at that range, something that I can't say for my 243. I doubt I will ever shoot a deer at that range, but having the confidence in the equipment is nice. In fact, somewhere else on here someone posted a thread about "the perfect deer rifle"... I would probably nominate this one.

That Will Do It

You happen to get a pretty decent Rifle.

The way a 350 Rem Mag pounds you in that little Model-7, I would think that 2 shots touching would be just great.

I had a originol 600 Mohawk, (or was it a 660), in 350 Mag way back when. I think it would keep 3 shots in 2 inches. I say I think because I never shot it three times in a row...........jackie

I met a guy years back now at the local range shooting a Brno in .375 Holland with a brand new 2-7 Leupold mounted on it. After I watched him put down 4 five shot cloverleaf (OK, big cloverleaf) groups with it, he explained that he'd just returned from a Leopard safari to Ceylon (damn, was it that long ago) & he'd missed out because his other brand scope failed.

That Brno wouldn't have gone 8 pounds with the scope & a full magazine & this guy weighing maybe 130 pounds was shooting in shirtsleeves with just a blanket tossed on the bench to protect his shoulders.

As light & handy as the Seven's are my first choice for a packing piece is the XP-100R's topped with Leupold 2.5-8X EER's.

My Rem Custom XP-100R chambered in 350 RM has harvested caribou, blk bear, moose pushing handloaded Sierra 225 SBT's at 2575fps over 59gr of IMR 4895.
After hundreds of handloads it is now fitted with a weed burner-AHHH!!!!!

The Custom KS & AWR's in my possession, chambered in 243,260,7mm-08,7mmSAUM,308,300SAUM & 350RM shoot sub MOA with handloads.

For their intended purpose,the XP-100R's & Seven's once stocked/pillared/bedded are handy.
