Mirage shields ??

Does anyone know, what, if any, affect putting a mirage shield on your barrel has on the delicate harmonics, developed as the bullet goes down the barrel. I would think that sticking the shield on top of a barrel might change things enough to change group size.

These are usually held on with two small peices of velcro stuck to the barrel on top of the muzzle and again just ahead of the scope. The weight of it all is so light, you and the barrel will never know it's there.

As your groups are opening up you look around and wonder what is going on,poultergiest(sp). Little wavy lines douwn range. Oooops, I forgot another one.

Not trying to be a wise a$$ but the wind can put just as much pressure on the barrel as a mirage shield. Personally I think the mirage shield is a non issue as your groups will definitely get worse without one and a mirage shield would have more of an adverse affect hanging off the scope then on the barrel.

Amen!

You point blank shooters mightn't notice it all that much but when we're shooting 1200 yards in serious wind, particularly when there's some gusting in it, that scopes make their own alterations if you don't screw the long mirage tubes off pronto.

Point blank?

What's point blank shooting? Oh, that must be a "chuck and pray" shooting term. Now I get it. ...Dave

Dave, "point blank" is what us long range Benchresters call the short range guys. If you can see your bullet holes in the paper, you're a "point blanker."

Since I can't afford a tuner, I thnk I'll put a couple sets of velcro on and tune by moving the shield in and out.

What weight would you recommend?how far from the muzzle & what material would you suggest?Do you think the width of shadow on the barrel will have any adverse effects.
Thanks Jim:confused:

your on to something

the shadow will cool that quadrant of the bbl. and cause the bore to be drawn up at the muzzle..!!! VIOLA...I just figgerd out what is givin me all that verticle...ahhahaaha......Roger

The use of Mirage TUBES and screw on SUN SHADES is extremely rare these days (I've never seen any in competition) because they add weight and more importantly it was found that air tended to heat up inside the tube and caused the very problem everyone was trying to avoid ... sight picture distortion. The SHIELD, on the other hand, allows heat waves to be deflected away from the barrel and sight picture. Art

So the real question is:

We have our bit of venetian blind and our Velcro dots, now which way up do we place the strip ? Curve up or curve down ?? There just has to be a technically best way to do it, anybody able to model the rising warm air and analyse which curve direction best clears the air from the scopes line of sight ???

Also what is the best colour for the strip, plain off white or should I paint the thing, reflective silver, matte black, maybe glossy black to match my stock ???

:D :D

A slight breeze is enough to blow barrel heat mirage out of your sight picture. I have rarely shot in perfect conditions, so I think it's just another voodoo issue..... Shields work, or they don't, do whatever you believe works best for you.....:p
