McLane Tilton "MT Guns"

Just thinking of doing business with Mr. McLane Tilton of Santa Barbara and Las Vegas. Does anyone have any experience doing gun deals with the man or the firm MT Guns? I am particularly interested in trading up from my Savage Anschutz Match 64 and he has offered to help me. I am thinking about going into an Anschutz 1407 which allegedly has a 54 Action and an 8oz two stage trigger and is in the 11 pound weight class. All the data says that this will be a step up for me but just want to see if anyone can help me out with MT Guns. They are offering a trade that by all accounts is fair. But, do I send my gun first? Do they send the new one first after receiving my check for the difference? Am I safe here???

MT Guns

Haven't done any business with Mac in a few years but he was always fair and honest with me. As far as sending your gun first that would but be up to Mac. Either way I think you would be safe based on my experience.

I echo what Gene says. I haven't done any business with him in a while but I would trust him to be honest and fair.

I have purchased -

A couple of rifles in the past from him. I had good results with my transactions. Pete

Mac is a great guy, very trustworthy and I doubt if you'll find anyone with a bigger inventory of "pre-owned" Anschutz and similar rifles in stock. He also carries many specialized parts, along with bare stocks and barrels.

Go for it...bought a Mk III Martini from Mac this spring. Fast service, gun in super shape, answered all of my questions. Will buy another soon from him....Steve Staberg

......Mac is the one of the nicest guys you will ever do business with. A friend of mine and I went to his shop near Lake Tahoe and he bought a rifle ( .22 ) and Mac said if you do like like the way it shoots bring it back and try another. Hard to beat that! This was about 5 years ago!.... Jan

I've had great experience with Mac. I bought my RPA2000 Palma rifle from him a couple years ago. I told him what I was looking for and he set it up with sights and extra barrels for $2000. He said that I should not send him money until I had a chance to look it over at my FFL. He has been very helpful on follow up questions as well. A real stand up guy, and I will do business with him again.

Thank you

Thanks to one and all (8) of you who saw and took the time to respond to my thread. In this time of internet fraud and unknown quantities in the world it is only prudent to do what one can to validate a decision with others who have been there and done that. I got similar reactions from a post on gunbroker.com's forum. But in that case only two folks were able to respond. It is much more affirming to hear from a larger sampling and for all of the reactions to be so positive.

This is a great use of the technology.

Now, I only hope that all of you who responded are not just Mac and his crew piling it on under aliases that they use to dupe the unsuspecting. Just kidding.

Thank you sincerely,

Tim Engelhardt

Tim: No alias here. I am who I say I am. Your job is to report here on your experience in purchasing/dealing with Mac. There are a great many of us who will be very surprised if your experience is not totally positive. I hope you get exactly what you want from him. Treat him nice he is one of the good guys. bob finger

Bob,
I will report and hope that it is as good as all these previous experiences seem to have been. I had a conversation with Mac this afternoon. They gave me his cell # a few days ago and he actually answers it. I hope to be making the deal as a Christmas present to myself and will gladly report.

Thanks again,

Tim

Results of the purchase

Aside from FedEx having the worst tracking system in the universe and the state of Ohio being backed up on background checks and delaying me. The results are wonderful. MT, both Mac and Bruce, who works for him, were great throughout the entire transaction.

Only issue, but thankfully of little consequence, is the wood of the stock is rough at best and that was not clearly declared as far as I am concerned. But I was not buying this rifle to show in antique shows I bought it to shoot. And boy does it shoot.

The trigger is absolutely wonderful to this novice benchrest shooter. I had an older Savage Anschutz and my brother has a new Anschutz sporter. Both have good triggers. But this one is unbelievable.

It is a tack driver. My maiden voyage last Sunday produced several groups that were one ragged tear, my overall objective, and one of those is < .5" outside dimensions measured with calipers.

I tried junk Federal, Wolf Match Target and RWS Subsonic, then got to Wolf Match Extra. Boy, it likes Match Extra that is where the groups tightened up. It definately outshoots me. I will have to practice long and hard to optimize this rifle.

Good Shooting to all and thanks for all your assistance,

TE:)

Mac Tilton is a class act. I talked to him a couple times on the phone. I almost bought a Anschutz 54 off of him, but ended up buying a Suhl 150 instead. Mac told me at the time any used gun I bought from him he would stand behind to shoot to my liking, or he would trade the gun out for another. He told me I could try the gun for 2 weeks and either trade it in for another or give me my money back minus the shipping of course. Now you can't beat that deal on a used gun. Mac actually is a true gunsmith. He made his money making NASCAR racing clutches I believe is what he told me. His son now runs his business.
