Max Velocity for low drag bullets?

Jim B

Jim I e-mailed Henry Childs and he too had some failures with the 117's.He actually had more than I would expect from him and him continuing to use them.
He said the new bullets will have a thicker jacket.

Are they to be 117 grains ? I was told of the 111grain new bullet , length to be somewhere around the 105 -108 length .

If the "new " bullets are indeed 117 grains with a thicker jacket they are going to be really long . I cant seat the 117's I have out as long as I would like and my bbl is throated for the 115 DTACS.

Jim he said the thicker jackets would displace some lead and make the bullets lighter.

To answer your question

I feel that running no more then 3100fps at the correct twist is a nice safe max. I think the most accurate velocity falls in the 2800 to 3000fps range. Of course, there are instances where these very heavy for cal bullets have been run significantly faster but there should be 100% success at this level of performance.

I think you will find that barrels will have an enormous effect on your results.

I have had several barrels that ATE bullets well below speeds that others were shooting. Other barrels that shot their best accuracy at well below expected maximums.

In LR shooting, I prefer the highest BC bullet at the highest velocity that I can handle the recoil for. Wind is my biggest enemy and can turn a 1/4min rifle into a 'Where's the bullet hole?".
