Manson Reamer

I have a .243AI manson reamer that belongs to a client. The client wants me to use this reamer to chamber his barrel with but, for the life of me I cant get the C-Clip off thats holding the live pilot on. Whats the trick??

Maybe squeeze the clip out by the "points" on a flat surface enough so you can get a point under the "circle" and pop it off... and maybe lose it as it pops off ... do this on a magnetic pad...

Dennis,

This C-Clip is so tiny it's all I can do to hold the reamer and move the clip at the same time. I'll try your suggestion and see what happens. Man I love PTG Reamers even more now.

Removing the e ring.

Take a screw driver (straight bladed type) use the side of the blade to push the tips (both) of the e-ring simultaneously. The ring will pop right off. If not you may have to use a pointed tool to finish the job removing the ring.

Here Is Another Tip

What ever method you choose, put the reamer in a baggie. The reason?? When that little clip pops off, you will know where it went.

I do this with ejectors, extractors, or any tiny thing that is under spring tension.........jackie

I got it off earlier.............what a pain. I used two small screw drivers. I like the small plastic bag idea Jackie, thanks. Have I mentioned how much I like PTG Reamers lately ;)

Get a supply of the three different sized C rings.

I called and got a half dozen of the three primary sizes of the c-rings. You never know when you might loose one.

I spoke to the owner of JGS and he said they were going to convert to screws sometime in the future.

I keep a jewelers screwdriver at each lathe. Grip the reamer like it was a gameboy leaving three fingers free on each hand. With the reamer pointing up catch the left tip of the clip with a finger nail and push the other side with the screwdriver blade turned flat. I've been doing it so long I only lose 5 or 6 a year now. It's not hard but tricky to figure out the smoothest way to remove them without them dissappearing into a floor covered with metal chips. I put up with them because I like Manson reamers and so far no amount of nagging has gotten him to change his mind.

None never did I had better things to do. I had to figure out how to get those damn clips off as I like Manson's reamers.

Are These The Correct Clips??

They make C-Clips that are designed with cut away in the sides 1/2 way up from the openning to put a screw driver in so you can just pop it out. Why aren't they furnishing this design on these reamers??............jackie

I had a Savage 1907 pistol part fly across the shop.
I thought it landed in a waste basket full of chips from the mill.
I could not magnetically find it, so I picked though all the chips.
I could not find it.
A year later, I found that the part landed in a box of rifle parts.

So now I avoid taking things like that apart in a room full of clutter.

c-clip

The proper name of the clips are called jeeze clips "jeeze there goes another one"

Chris,
I just keep an extra half dozen for that reason. They always fly off into the basement black hole; never to be seen again. Ball detents and little compressed springs along with tiny roll pins join this company of lost little 'thingies'. Seriously, a magnetic tray or a baggie will usually capture the wayward 'thingie'.

Standardization

There seems to be a standard to reamer shaft diameter .4375, The pilot races come in standard sizes. Why can't they all use screws? All the reamer makers regrind each others reamers, it would seem if you sent a Manson Reamer into Kiff for a regrind he would return it with a screw. But they don't.

Hard to drill and tap hardened tool steel.
I don't know why Manson doesn't go to screws. At this point I don't really care. I've become accustomed to taking them on and off and pretty much have a life time supply of E clips. I've lost some screws also so. I just appreciate the reamers he makes.

Dave Kiff Would Love It

Hey Dave, drill and tap a 5-32 hole in the end of a finished High Speed Steel Reamer. Just add the $5 charge to my re-grind bill.:D......jackie

Thanks for all the replys guys. The barrel is chambered and I'm bedding as I type. The chamber came out real nice, great finish. I dont really care for the clips but I guess it's all in what you get use to. I prefer the screws and will continue my business with PTG.

I did find out that PTG Bushings will not fit Manson Reamers, they're too long.
