Luray Va.

If you want to stay in Luray two good motel choices are the Best Western (maybe 10 minutes from the range or Days Inn maybe 15 minutes from the range. I've stayed in both and usually bed down in the Days Inn. There are some fancy places too, if you want that. There is a B&B directly across the road from the Piney Hill range that I'm told is very nice but pricey. Google Piney Hill B&B for information and/or very good directions to the range. bob

The Piney Hill B&B is rated one of the top B&Bs in the country as per Trip Adviser. I stayed there last year for the Indoor Nationals with my wife. The accommodations were first class and the breakfasts were truly gourmet. The guys running it are extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the area attractions and eateries. If you want to take and treat your wife to a nice weekend or impress a girlfriend, I highly recommend it. It is pricier than a cheap motel, but you can't get more convenient than staying directly across the road from the match. A chance for some major brownie points guys.

I always wanted to stay there

But...the lower price and "other" stuff kept me away. Wish I had done it, if only once, to know what it was all about.

Wilbur: Since you last visited we have added another recliner or two to the furniture compliment at Piney Hill. One can be yours for the night if you want to reduce expenses. I have to admit I spent a long weekend in one of those chairs one night a year or so ago. bob

Sounds like my kinda chair! I prolly couldn't get up next morning but I have hard enough problems with that anyways...

In town there a few options worth considering. If you are on a budget the Best Western in town is a decent, yet clean option. They have a restaurant that is open for breakfast only. You will be right on main street, so traveling in and out of town will be easy. The Days Inn outside of the town limits on 211 is another decent option that is budget friendly.

The "Grand" Hotel in Luray would probably be the Mimslyn Inn. Its a historic Inn that went through a million+ dollar renovation around 2006-2007. If you are bringing the wife along, this is a decent option. Its also located on Main Street, so its minutes away from most attractions.

There are a lot of River Cabins and B&B's in the area. These offer a lot of privacy and enjoyment for the price. Many of these cabins are located along the river, but this is the time of year to get a decent deal. Do a search and you will find a lot of options. As noted above the Piney Hill B&B across the road is one of the highest rated B&B's in VA.

Another forgotten place is the local Yogi Bear. They have a bunch of Cabins, that range from very nice to primitive. If you are in the off season, this is a nice CHEAP option.

If you are looking to stay outside of Luray, New Market is a quick drive across the mountain. There are a few commercial Hotels right off I-81 in New Market.

Does anyone know the room price at the Mimslyn

We had a meal over there on the way south and the food wasn't that pricey ( in the pub anyway). They don't seem to publish the prices of their rooms.

Thanks,

Pete

Pete: Google is your friend. I found this in about 10 seconds:

A telephone call might get you a "special rate". bob

Well, I'll be! I looked before we booked into the BW in December and there were no prices quoted. They are a bit high but when one considers many of us are spending the Nursing Home's money, what the hey ? Some of the reviews for the BW will curl your hair :) but, so far, it has been fine for us.

Thanks Bob.

Pete

Pete: The Best Western used to be real dump. They remodeled all the rooms a couple years ago, put in flat screen TV's, re-caulked the tubs, did a general spruce up. So if those reviews are more than about 18 months old you can ignore them. I will not give it 5 stars, but for a night or two it is comfortable. I stayed there one night in December, its okay. I'd say its now on a par with the Days Inn where I usually stay.

Remember Luray is a tourist town and motels cater to all kinds of tourists. The good news is we shoot in Piney Hill during the tourist off season. bob
