Length of ram movement

What part of the compound movement on a reloading press gives you a 4” up and down movement on your ram. A swaging press only has about 2” but the same amount of pressure. Look at a Corbin with the long arms and it only moves 2" why? Can a Rockchucker be made in to a short stroke bullet swaging press?

The middle part.

As an engineer, you will recognize that the leverage varies with the ratio of the horizontal distance from the pivot point to the center of the ram, to the distance from the pivot point to the point of pressure on the press's handle. As the pivot point moves closer to the ram, vertical travel distance of the ram lessens and leverage increases.

RCBS is Rock Chuck Bullet Swage. It wouldn't bother me to put a cheater bar on an older press. I would be hesitant on a new one.

I'm making 30 cal. bullets on my Rockchucker and you have to put a lot of force on the handle when you point then up. The press is working OK but I will have a large right arm after making 200 or 300 bullets.

Sunnen makes a great little piston pin press. It has an electrically driven hydraulic pump. Put the swaging dies under the ram and pull the handle. Minimal effort. Sunnen also has some super slippery lube.

Driving the bottom of your press's ram with a big hammer would be another way, but I doubt that the cast iron lower platform would hold up well.

I would expect that forging the point onto the bullet blank would require some pressure. Maybe this is why RCBS used to make those huge presses? CH4D still makes one. I wonder how an UltraMag would fare?
