Just bought a Savage F-Class

Generally speaking... many 600yd F-Class matches consist of three strings of 2 sighters plus 20 shots for record, so 66rds. Some places allow 'unlimited' sighters for your first string of the day, so loading 70-75rds wouldn't hurt. Basically it's not a bad idea to pack an extra 5-10rds over what the match program calls for in case of reloading mistakes, range alibis, etc. There are other formats depending on the venue, so it would be worth your while to get ahold of the match director or someone who is familiar with the match you want to go to... it might be an 80rd match (4 strings) instead of a 60, etc.

I never heard anything very positive about iSnipe... I have Ballistic FTE which is okay, but I prefer KAC Bulletflight Level III personally. Gives me what I need, simply, and without too much clutter.

Thanks I'll take a look at those. I've found I'm somewhat limited by having Macintosh computer and phone.

Stormin' Norman

The closest F-Class competition is at Camp Butner located off Exit 191 on I- 85 which is just North of Durham, NC. The next 600yd match will be March 6-7 at Butner. You can get more info by going to the North State Shooting Club web site (www.northstateshootingclub.com) and clicking on "Match Schedule and Results". This will list all of the matches put on by the club and by scrolling through all of the dates you will find the match program for each scheduled match. These will give you starting times and all the info you need.

Usually on Friday preceding the match the range will be open for practice at around 1 PM.

I plan on shooting that match and if you attend just ask anyone in charge for Stormin' Normin and I will be glad to help you get started.

One of the best ballistic programs that I have found for long range shooting is: Silhouette Ballistics by Larry Medler in Michigan. His E-Mail address is Lmedler@comcast.net His program has both exterior and interior ballastics and not only prints out trajectory charts but will print out windage charts in chart form or windage clock form in clicks, inches, or min of angle. The last one he sent me cost $38 and he now has an updated version. It is excellent!

If you are just shooting a KD range, I don't personally think you need a ballistics program to bring with you. It's nice, and kind of cool, but not necessary. Put in the necessary range time before hand, get a solid 100yd zero and some chrono data for your gun & load, and run the numbers through JBM on the web and print out the page. Use a wind value that lends itself to easy mental math, like 1mph or 2mph or 10mph - something you can multiply/divide in your head - and then draw out one quadrant of the wind angles - 12 o'clock, 1, 2, & 3 o'clock, with the appropriate multipliers - 0, 1/2, 3/4, 1). The printout should be enough to get you on paper for elevation, and there will almost assuredly be someone there with a wind meter or who can introduce you to the wind flags and give you a base windage adjustment to dial on for starters. If you can figure out the wind speed reasonably close, use your printout and multiply your wind value - if you used 1mph for the calculations, and there is a 7-8mph wind out there coming from 2 o'clock... it sounds harder than it is. There's a reason the old Palma shooters use a wind 'clock' printout to simplify the process and make it more 'visual'. It's worked for a lot of years before iPhones and PDAs came out - and the batteries never die!

Big Shurl,

At Piedmont you will be able to shoot in two match classes, Light and Heavy. Each match consists of four targets with five shots for record on each. That's a total of 40 shots for record for both matches. You will need a similar number of rounds for sighters so if you bring 100 or so rounds to your first match you''ll have plenty.

Any match where I can use some form of rest. Bi-pod , benchrest , bags. I thought the shoot at Charlotte rifle and pistol was a standing, sitting, and prone match. My new savage weighs 14 pounds and is seriously front heavy. I don't think I could shoot it very well off hand.

I shoot in the varmint class off of a bench. They have several classes to shoot in off the bench on the first Saturday of every month. The range only goes out to 300 yard.

Hey Norm! I bet you don't remember me, but you pulled targets for me on sight in day for a match in April 2007. That was my first time at one of those matches, and someday I'll get back down there to shoot some more.

Take care,
Joe

Joe:

I can't remember that far back. Being an old Fart I suffer from that dreaded CRS disease. Please get back down to Butner so that we can get reaquainted. We have a lot of fun and some good shooting. One of the highlights of the matches for F-Class shooters is going to Silos for their prime rib buffet after the day's match on Saturday. We reserve the bandquet room and tell lies, exaggerations and eat way too much of their homemade deserts. The next day we rock back and forth while shooting. I wonder why!

Thanks for the info I'll see you there. Who runs the match? I shoot the 22 fun match every month, and the silhouettes with Rybensky when I don't have another match somewhere or at church.

Hey Road King were you at the match SAT. I ended up winning my class with my new to me Savage. First time reloading ammo ever, and first time shooting that particular rifle. I got classified as a modified I think there were 5 or 6 guys in my class. I'm not sure why modified? My gun is the way it came from the factory. I think maybe because of the caliber. 6.5/.284 norma

EDIT: Does anyone know what my Savage F-class would class in an F-class match. Another Dumb question what do the class abbreviations mean. Like what is a VLS gun, if I'm getting that right?
