Jackie - 30 PPC Tune Question

Hi Jackie,

I have a 30 PPC in a bolt gun now, just got it chambered today. In your experience do they seem to be finicky like the PPC with tune. I'm going to shoot a score match next Saturday and I'd like to pre-load if I can count on it to stay in tune. I have N120 and Aus IMR 4227 that I can use in this. I plan to use BIBS 112 gr bullets. I may put some tuner weights on it later but not for now.

Thanks, Joel

Joel,

Obviously I'm not Jackie ;), but if you are interested in my experiences with a 30PPC, I'll give you a few observations.

I have found the 30PPC to be easy to develop a load for with 115 grain bullets, but slightly less easy with 118's. I have not tried 112's or 110's yet, but I would expect them to be just as easy as the 115's. I have been using H4227 (Australian). This powder does spike quickly pressure wise at the top end, but has worked fine with my chosen load from cool to hot weather. I have not changed the load since I finished load development, so it has not been finicky.

Accuracy has been very good with it at 100 (.1's and .0's when I do my part). I have used it in three club matches (22, 22, and 23X's). These matches were in varying conditions, so the potential is there. On the other hand, I do feel that I am giving up a bit at 200 yards in windy conditions compared to my 30BR, but maybe that's just the shooter :D.

Good luck,
Jim

Thanks Jim, I appreciate anyones results, I knew Jackie has worked with one but I know a few others have as well. It's good to hear that it is not finicky. I have some Euber 115 I can try as well as the 112 BIBS.

We have found the same as what Jim has said.
The BIB 112 is our favorite bullet. What you will find is that N120 with this bullet is just a tad slow. It acts a lot the N133 does in a 6PPC. It doesn't really come tolife untill you really stack it in there. With 115's and 118's, the N120 is perfect at a velocity in the mid 2900 fps range.

The Austrailian 4227 is the most accurate powder we have found with the 112 and lighter bullets. At just under 3000 fps, it will shoot with anything. But, as we have warned, there is a fine line between "just right", and primers falling out of the pockets. Just don't be tempted.

I used to try to go over 3000 fps, but there is no need. I originolly developed this thing as a 100 yard score chambering using light bullets, so it would not beat you up at 10.5 pounds. It does a very good job at that. The fact that you can just screw a barrel onto one of your 6PPC's is also a big plus as well..........jackie

30 Ppc

Joel and Jackie,

I have finally started shooting my .30 Walker as I call it, a .30 based on the Grendel case.

Jackie - thanks for all your help on the front side!!

Joel - we can sort this whole thing out together!!

I have finally finished fireforming and turning the brass, and have started load development with the 112 BIB. I had some H4198 on hand, and as that seems to be the most popular powder with the .30BR, I thought I would give it a try.

Well it gets right up to 3000 fps with no problems, and has been grouping pretty well right right from the start. Best groups were at either 2950 or 2990 fps, and I was happy enough with them to go ahead and order 1000 more BIBs... :D

I sure wish the Tomball club score matches did not fall on the same day as the 1k matches at Bayou, as I am primarily a f-class shooter, but maybe one day I can join you Jackie and show you how she has "come together."

Walker TX Ranger,

I have a AR-15 chambered in the 30 PPC and I had to go with H4198 in that to get it to cycle. It is slower burning than N120 and 4227 which is what I needed to make the bolt cycle correctly. I am shooting the Speer TNT 125 gr in the AR-15. Your case is a bit larger than the PPC so the H4198 may be fine but I think in the smaller PPC case it will take 4227 or N120 to acheive the higher velocities.

Thanks for everyones response.
