I have had these rifles I inherited from a friend for a few years and have not been able to find out a lot of information about them. They don't have sights or scope mounts and I have not been able to find any for them. I'm trying to decide whether to keep and shoot or sell. Any information would be appreciated!

The only accessories I have for them are the target palm rest that attaches to the rail on the underside of the forearm.

Remington 40X 7.62 Nato
Appears to be Remington similar to the Remington 40XC NM shown here in an old Gun Digest:

The Winchester look's as iit may have a custom stock. Winchester once made a international free rifle, but it was not stocked like that. That large grip with a swell look's like a stock a fellow shooter had. He said it was made by a P. J. somebody. I don't recall the whole name.

Your rifles were not intended for use in BR competition...

The two centerfire rifles appear to be set up for highpower rifle shooting (notice the clip slotted receivers), and the .22 may be appropriate for scoped prone only matches in its present condition.

For the centerfire rifles, "proof" of highpower influence may be established by loading rounds in the magazine - if 5 rounds fit, then the rifles are appropriate for "Over the Course" shooting". Fewer than that, they would still be eligible for use in "prone only" matches, since rules require single loading (and firing) each round. Another thing to check would be the presence of plug screws near the muzzle - these would be used removed when installing a front sight base. (Note that such screws are clearly visible in your third photo of the 40X, making it a "position gun".) Since the serial number is clearly visible on the 40XC's receiver, contacting Remington to see when it was made is possible.

Hard to say, but it appears (based on the lack of scuff marks on the receiver, and the condition of the plug screws) the Winchester never had a scope mounted on it. It appears to be a push feed Model 70, making it a post-64 model. (This makes it less valuable to collectors, unless it's a rare model.) According to the table at http://www.wisnersinc.com/additional_info/Winchesterpost_64_M70.htm , your rifle's receiver was originally manufactured in 1977. Anybody know who maintains records for Winchesters back through 1977? It doesn't appear as if the Cody Firearms Museum's records cover these rifles.

Am not a collector, but the relative lack of scratches, dings, and powder residue on all three rifles make it appear they were very well cared for, and rarely (if ever) used.

Remington 40X's-
Look for the barrel code stamping,9'oclock position 1" fwd of the receiver ring.
40XR 22LR in hardwood position stock, fixed cheek w/ 2 way adj butt,I'd guess it was manufactured in the late 80's.
Looks as new.
40X 7.62 NATO 24" 1:10" twist Bbl-
Barrel code stamping to verify barrel manufacture date.
Looks as new.

Both are the predecessor to the 40XC models that were once chambered in .22LR,.223Rem & 7.62 NATO & stocked w/ McM synthetic(gray painted) 40XC stocks w/ adjustable cheek & 2 way butt plates.
The 7.62 NATO 40XC is the only caliber manufactured currently.

The Rem Custom shop can advise you of the dates of manufacture also.

Can't asst w/ Win 70-
I try to stay away from them at all cost!!!!

Thanks for all the reply's Gentlemen. I will do some more digging on the Remingtons based on the feedback. I have the original boxes for those, so I'll take pictures of the end flaps and post them. As for the Winchester, all I have is the rifle, no box or documentation.

James

Took some more pics today:

You can see the box end labels, the test target for the 40XC, the proof marks on the barrel for the 40XC and the inspectors letter for the 40XC.

Look for the barrel code stamping, 9'oclock position 1" fwd of the receiver ring
This is "OC"

For the centerfire rifles, "proof" of highpower influence may be established by loading rounds in the magazine - if 5 rounds fit, then the rifles are appropriate for "Over the Course" shooting".

Definitely holds 5 rounds per the owner's manual.

James

Found the sights for the rifles also

Here are the rear sights I found for the rifles.

I found no front sight :(, but I did manage to find one on eBay that appears to be a correct one and bought it: Redfield Olympic Globe Front Target Sight

The 40XR barrel code may be stamped on RH side of barrel as a couple of the custom shop smiths did years ago, fwd/aft of "REP" proof mark.
The only current 22LR 40X available is the green McM syn stocked BR configuration-40XRBR.

40XC 7.62NATO barrel date code-
BLACKPOWDERX
O C
O=July
C=1982

Redfield type receiver sight bases are available in various(3or4) heights, std 3 hole or 4 hole extended from-
Warner Tool Co in NH
Master Class Sports in CT
OK Weber in OR
Champions in OH
Most all 40X sight dovetail blocks were .167" height.

If memory serves me correctly,I believe my 40XR's have .155" front sight blocks & .490" height rear receiver sight bases.
I have 22mm RPA front sight tunnels & WTC #1 rear sights installed on my OTC rifles,so bases/blocks will be set up to your liking w/ the Swenson rear/Redfield Olympic front sight if you elect to shoot these rifles.

Looking at the .22, the block on the bridge is set up for the Bausch & Lomb, Lyman, or Unertl target-type 'scopes, which were long and were attached to both the barrel and receiver.

If you plan to sell these, try to find someone who wants them for a collection, I don't think anyone would actually use them for competition now, coming as they do from the dawn of factory interest in XC-type shooting models. That effort is now answered by small and tiny custom crafters, some of whom have substantial production considering their size.

Your friend must have thought highly of you to leave you these, or perhaps his family may have felt you were the only one who'd have enough appreciation for such articles to keep them from rusting...

Treat them kindly and you can have some fun with them if you like that facet of the sports.
