I looked through the archives to see if there was a thread on a compairason between H-4198 and IMR-4198 but did not find one. Has anyone done such a comparison and if so, would they be willing to share the results, either here or in a private message?

Pete, I'm unable to find my notes at the moment. I did try both over the chronograph. If
I recall , Dupont bulked much higher in the 30 br case and I did not get the velocity
hoped for. Thinking it was about 100 fps slower. The pressure was a tad higher
and it shot quite well. I think the window was narrow. Just didn't need a 2880
load for my 30 br

In a 30BR and weighed charges ... About a dead heat... IMR4198 Is "just" a tad slower (I think due to the longer kernals). Really no comparison when throwing charges... H4189 is a lot easier to throw through a measurer... Still, H4198 get's "sticky" and throws .3 - .5 grain variables....

I like the IMR version with "heavyer" 30BR bullets in a 17" barrel.... 120gr - 135gr.... Not that H4198 didn't perform, just got easier bolt throws at 2900 fps with 120 - 135gr bullets WITHOUT giving up accuracy.

110 - 116gr pills and H4198 are really hard to beat!

Did notice that IMR 4198 is a bit more dirty than H4198... But either powder went 50+ rounds without giving up any accuracy...
Have shot a whole agg with H4198 and without cleaning and the gun kept agging at the end. ... Many have seen this.

In a 222... I still like IMR4198 a bit better..... But it's close.

I saw some IMR-4198 in recent times that is small black granules, not the long extruded stuff of old. Is that what you were working with?

Hummm... Not seen the "small" stuff..... Test was with ohhhh 2000 year lot time frame and a few 1lb cans bought March of 2008 in the "Hodgdon" plastic bottles... Both IMR 4198 lotts were similar in size (long cut stuff) I.E. close to 2x longer than H4198...

Heard someone recently say'n that they had seen "shorter" cut IMR4198...........??? I have not seen it...

I think I heard someone say that the newer small cut stuff was faster than H-4198. I was looking for confirmation.
 
The shorter stuff may be...................

because of the proximities of the two powders, ballistically and perhaps the thought that, since they're so close, why not just make one.....?:eek:
After all, the same family now owns both.;)
 
pete, where my load is normally 34.5--34.8 with H-4198 and seems fine, The IMR produced
very flat primers and more case expansion at 32 grains. I did manage to get 33 grains
in the case, at the same level in the neck as 34.8 H. A lesser load at 31.5 IMR made
2880 and the node was on its way out. This was the same old long stick and thin
IMR thats been around for years. Just didn't think I could get in another node with the
extra 1/2 grain. I have no doubt that IMR has a more rapid pressure
build , therefore, I believe it is faster
