IMR 3031 in a Waldog?

I'm not trying to be ridiculous here but where I live you don't just go to the sporting goods store and pick up a 8lb'er of v133. I'll probably try it but thought I'd throw it out there, hoping to get a favorite load or a stern warning not to waste my time.:confused: Thanks.

I shoot a .100 short and i have tried several different powders. After having minimal luck, i finally broke down and went with the norm and tried some N133. For me and my barrels the N133 has been were the accuracy is at. Keep in mind that my testing thus far has been in below 35 degree weather. Once the air warms and stabilizes around here i may try a couple other powders just to be thurow (sp). I dont have any 3031 nor have i researched using it. Lee

There is no reason why IMR 3031 wouldn't work well in the Waldog. I have used it in a full length BR (6MM) and the .100 short 6MM BR and it worked as well as any other powder. The drawback is it burns hotter than most powders which can lead to pre-mature barrel burn-out or Firecracking.

3031 is really pretty fast, I think by weight even faster than N130.

If they made a short cut version that would throw half way decent, I have always thought it would be ideal for the 30BR. I have an old can that the individule granules can best be discribed as "chunks"...........jackie

Jackie - I think you have that wrong. IMR 3031 is a lot slower than N130. It's about midway between N133 and N135.

Tim - I doubt that you could get enough 3031 in a Waldog case to get the kind of velocity that's best for that little case. I've tried it in a PPC and about 28 to 29 grains is all that I was able to trickle in. But, the only way you'll find out is to try it.

Dennis Brame, a Southeastern Hall of Fame shooter (one NBRSA region), used 3031 in a PPC for a while. I can't remember how well he did those years, but at least it was in the hunt.

Thanks everybody. I think I will try it head to head against x-terminator, h322, and h4198. It has to shoot well in a range of weather to make it worth the extra hassle of it's bulky kernels. The thing that caught my eye about this powder is the fact that it has correct approximate burn rate and has survived on market for 80+ years.

I brought some 3031 to the range to day. Shot crappy out of the gate because started to low. But as I crept up the Culver clicks the groups started to shrink. I ran out of cases before I reached max but I started to get a clue as to what I think. Considering the pain dealing with the large kernels I think I will stick my smaller grained favorites. HAd another awesome day with 26.3gr x-terminator and Rem 7 1/2's :)

I am curious as to how this new batch of old 8208 is going to perform in the waldog case. My buddy has a little and he is trying to get me some so maybe i will soon know?? I shot a few groups with norma 200 the other day and i think it just might work? Lee

Lee, I bought 24lb of pulldown 8208 from Bruno. Will be in my hands when I get home from Pueto vallarta. I can let you know what I know if you guys don't try it first. Personally I think its going to be the cats meow. I also plan to mix h322 with 8208xbr 50/50 to speed xbr up a little. Can't get enough in with powder measure. Have to sift in the case very slowly.
