Blasphemous, I know, but I am considering rebarreling one of my Remington 37s. What do you gurus think about barrel length and diameter? Barrel manufacturers? The gun will be used off the bench.

Do you have a weight limit? What about balance? Are you using aperture sights and need length for sight separation? If these are not important tell your smith to cut the muzzle at the proper point and same thing on the chamber end. If he does not know what that means find yourself a different smith. There are lots of very good barrels out there today. Some very good ones come from folks like Rock Creek, Shilen, BenchMark, Broughton etc etc I just had a .875 outside diameter barrel put on a 37. No shoulder needed. this one is a Rock Creek and ended up about 27 inches long. The smith decided how long and what diameter it was going to be. bob

No weight limit. Scoped rifle. I have read that shorter barrels (18-20 inches) are actually more accurate than longer ones when using optical sights. Any merit there?

The vast majority of winning bench rest rim fire rifles I have seen have barrel lengths of 21 to 25 or so inches. A few longer and fewer shorter. bob
