Gentlemen,
I am in the process building a new stock for 600 yd IBS light gun. It has a three inch wide fore end,
And a two inch wide butt stock. Question, can I use a two inch wide front rest type bag, sitting in a metal box as a rear rest( no windage adjustment) or am I restricted to a bunny ear type sand bag( page 30)?
Thanking you all in advance,
Tom

The section the Wilbur is quoating states this:
"A vertical spacer under the rear bag will be allowed
as long as it incorporates no adjustments for windage or elevation. The vertical
spacer shall not contain any protrusions, which can be inserted into the bench
top or the sandbag. The rear sandbag shall not be contained in any manner. The
rear sandbag cannot in any way attach to the front rest."

So with that said, if you took the front bag like a #2 owl bag, and put it on a flat metal plate, it may be fine.

Here is what the IBS rule book says about 600 yard competition.
"a rear sand bag rest
shall support the rear part of a rifle: neither rest can be attached to the bench,
the rifle, nor each other; they must be movable in all directions independently of
the other. Any part of the rifle resting there on must maintain a minimum of onehalf
inch distance from any part of the retainer or container holding the sand bag
on which the rifle rests. Whenever the rifle makes contact on its sides, there may
be a maximum of sand one-half inch high and a minimum of one-half thick on each
side." "No device of any kind can restrict the
upward and/or rearward movement of the rifle. Any; sand bag used as a rest that
is not supported by a retainer and that has movement without restraint need not
comply with this rule."

For IBS 600 & 1,000 yard Light Guns:

There is no question a "regular" rear bag is legal. Protektor would probably make you one with a 2-inch space between the ears.

You could probably use a regular front bag at the rear. Problem in interpretation of the rules would come with that "metal box" -- If it keeps he bag from moving -- that is, if it is more than a simple spacer, some Range Office might rule it illegal. At which point you could protest, and the whole matter would have to go to the IBS for resolution.

My thought is a regular front bag designed for a front rest wouldn't be heavy enough by itself to keep from moving around on the bench or on a spacer. I suppose it depends on what you're shooting. I shoot a .338 LG sometimes, and a regular bag filled with heavy sand moves a lot.

If you know what ranges you're going to shoot at, you could get up with the RO ahead of time to see if she/he thought there was a problem. Of course, another competitor could protest your bag, too.

Best solution, if you believe in the stock, would be to have a rear bag made with the spacing between the ears that you need.

Edit:

Might work to have a front bag sewn to a brick bag for your "rear bag"...

Didn't read close enough - read "light gun" instead of "600 yd IBS light gun" - apologies for the misinformation.
